I want to work in a restaurant one day. Be able to be a part of creating dishes for clients to consume.
What do I currently do for work?
I work in a kennel. I take care of dogs and cats while their owners are away.
The only relation of the two careers is that I get to feed the animals their breakfast and dinner each day.
But that's perfectly okay that I don't work in a restaurant yet, because I enjoy my job at the kennel. My job is a stress relief compared to other people's jobs. I like the fact that I come home smelling like the animals who jumped on me earlier in the day because they simply wanted to play. That I had slobber in my hair because a large black lab (his name is Booker, FYI - he's my favorite), would try to lick my face and miss, but he didn't care! That I had cat hair all over my pants because a cat decided to curl up in my lap as I scratched their chin. My job is fun. I truly enjoy it. But, it's not what I want to do with my life.
I knew I wouldn't work there for ever, but it was fine for now. As a college student, I was okay with just having a job. To be able to receive money and live off of it. I know one day that I will have my chance to be a part of a restaurant. Or a catering company. Or become a private chef. Anything food related is in my future.
I don't currently work in my career field and that's perfectly fine with me. I know I will get there some day. I have not completely given up my hopes and dreams. Neither should any one else who feels discouraged because they aren't doing what they want to do with their career. You'll get there some day too.
For now, my job is mainly for fun. If I'm not going to work in my career field at the moment, I should at least find a job that doesn't make me rip my hair out. As should anyone else. Explore different opportunities. Learn new skills. I never bathed or cut an animal's nails before starting at my kennel job. Now, I can say that I have learned both those and I am able to use what I have learned in the future for when I have my own animals. Just because you went to college for one thing, absolutely does not mean you cannot do anything else. Even for those who went to college, got a degree, and ended up on a different career path completely. That's okay! Do what makes you happy right now and figure it all out later. You could end up changing your mind completely on what you want to do. You'll find your way to your career one day.
So, my name is Samantha and I aspire to work in a kitchen, but for now, I love my job as a kennel worker and that's okay!
