Uruguayan filmmaker, Fede Alvarez, is back with another solid mystery / suspense movie. "Don't Breathe" starts off with 3 regular people trying to survive in the cruel conditions of Detroit. Rocky (Jane Levy) and her 2 partners, Alex (Dylan Minnette) and Money (Daniel Zovatto), are a group of "friends" who rob wealthy people in order to make quick cash without working too hard. They set out to rob a blind man that made a great amount of money after his daughter was hit by a car and died. After they enter his home, they soon realize that this job was not as easy as they had figured.
Jane Levy as Rocky was very convincing in her performance. Although being a thief, she had reason behind her actions and she was {deep down} a good person at heart. The acting was superb and there were some scenes in the movie where she seemed natural in her performance. Her chemistry with Dylan Minnette was off the charts.
Dylan Minnette as Alex was also very convincing. Going into the movie, I was excited for his performance because I've always been a fan of him. Something about him just radiates a fun and exciting environment in the theater. I was always on the edge of my seat when he was caught in confrontation with the blind man (Stephen Lang).
Daniel Zovatto as Money was a bit of a downfall in the movie. His performance was over the top at times and I wasn't drawn into his character, so I didn't really care about him. Whenever he was on screen, his chemistry with Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette was embarrassingly low. To top that off, his character was obnoxious and oblivious. He was unlikeable at best. I think that the writers themselves didn't care much for the character because he had little character development and little chemistry with the others.
My favorite character in this movie was Stephen Lang as the blind man. Every time he was on screen, I had 100% of my attention on him. He was absolutely perfect as the blind man. His performance was fantastic and his character was disturbing. He was so good in portraying a crazy ex-soldier blind guy that he made me uncomfortable and had me worried for the characters in danger. To look the part, Stephen Lang put on a crazy amount of muscle mass, and he was in great shape for the role.
However,he had a sidekick, his dog. I love dogs! I hated this dog. He would do things in the movie that were so unrealistic and silly that it took me out of the movie. He was annoying because whenever the characters seemed to have gotten away, the dog would be right behind them ready to attack. I have never despised an animal so much. I was wishing for it to die.
My favorite part of this movie was every scene Stephen Lang appeared. He is a genius and a natural on screen. The biggest flaws in the movie were the dog and Daniel Zovatto. Going into the movie, I was expecting horror because that's the vibe I got when watching the trailer. Nope! It is not a scary movie. It is very suspenseful and kind of shocking but it is far from a horror movie. Do not go in expecting to be horrified because you will not enjoy the movie and you will miss out on a greatly written story.
The movie dominated the box office with a $26 million opening weekend. "Don't Breathe" is on its second week and it still dominated movies with a $4.2 million Friday box office run. Deservingly so, the movie is getting high praise from both critics and fans. It currently stands at an 86% from the critics and an 84% from the users on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sitting at 1hr and 28m, the movie had the perfect running time to keep you interested in the story.
All in all, "Don't Breathe" is a very well written movie. It was very exciting and very fast paced. I couldn't sit still in the last 45 minutes because of how crazy it was getting. I loved it and I highly recommend it.
Verdict: 8.5/10
