During a time of desperation and despair, people would focus on improving their hygiene, taking care of their loved ones, and practicing social distancing. Right?
NOPE!
Hypersensitivity never takes a break, even during a pandemic!
During the March 18th Coronavirus Update, ABC reporter Cecilia Vega asked President Donald Trump why does he keep using the term "Chinese Virus", and Trump responds saying that the term isn't racist and that he's being accurate because the country of origin is China. He went on to say that he has a great love for everyone in the country and said that the Chinese government said at one point that the source of the virus were American soldiers.
What President Trump said to Vega is 100% accurate. Coronavirus originated from Wuhan, China, hence the term. Instead of being level headed and trying to calm things down, the mainstream media decided to virtue signal about the use of the term despite using a variation of "Chinese Virus" themselves.
But they don't use that term anymore!
Yeah sure, there are other names (COVID-19, Wuhan Virus, etc.) but "Chinese Virus" seems to be the most precise. And yes, Chinese Americans and other Asian Americans have faced the brunt of the virus with minor aggressions and attacks but here's the thing. Racist people will always be racist no matter what. It's unfortunate that they're using a time of worry and stress to fuel their already existing prejudices.
With "Chinese Virus" now deemed offensive, should we stop using the terms "German Measles" "West Nile Virus" and "Spanish Flu" because they're offensive to people who come from those places? What the mainstream media did do President Trump is a classic case of "Rules for thee, not for me." The mainstream media used alternative terms of "Chinese Virus" without outcry but the Commander-In-Chief says it outright, he's called a "racist". If you find the term "Chinese Virus" offensive, then that's a you problem. Yes, I get it, disease has no nationality, but if we sweep the origin under the rug, it wouldn't be fair to the other diseases that have been identified by their place of inception. As I stated earlier, social distancing should be practiced to avoid the spread of the virus. Here's a suggestion from yours truly. Distance your hypersensitivity from something that's actually offensive.
