5 Reasons Why You Should Go Gamma Phi Beta

Sorority recruitment registration has opened at Missouri State University and at other colleges across the country. Countless freshman girls are anxiously trying to put their best foot forward in the hopes that are able to run home to their dream sorority. I know this because last year I was one of them. Going Gamma Phi Beta was one of the best decisions I've made and my goal is to share my love for this sorority with the incoming freshman class.

Gamma Phi Beta's philanthropic mission is "building strong girls" and we achieve this with our philanthropic partner Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run is an after-school program for girls in 3-5th grade and 6-8th grade that helps them become more confident and resilient while training for a 5k that takes place at the end of the semester. Women in Gamma Phi Beta are able to get involved with Girls on the Run in many different ways. Some women volunteer to be coaches and have to dedicate about two hours twice a week to go to a local elementary or middle school and do a few games and activities with the girls and then usually the girls run a bit to train for their race. Coaches are expected to also act as mentors for the girls and are to help promote healthy conversation among the girls. If coaching isn't quite your style you could volunteer to be a running buddy. Running buddies usually attend the after-school program as well as the 5k to talk to the girls as well as provide encouragement. There also different ways to get involved and volunteer at the 5k at the end of each semester.

We were founded upon a rock

"Founded upon a rock" has been Gamma Phi Beta's motto ever since it was founded at Syracuse University in 1874. One of the founders, E. Adeline Curtis, said "Since the rock is the firmest and most enduring substance, able to withstand the ravages of time, and offering the strongest protection, it seemed fitting that Gamma Phi Beta should be thus founded". This phrase is largely based on Matthew 7:25 which says "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: because it was founded upon a rock".

G-phi girls are pretty in pink

Gamma Phi Beta went through some re-branding last summer. The sorority colors have been brown and mode since it was founded. However, they recently added pink and changed the official sorority logo.

We are one of the first

Gamma Phi Beta was actually one of the first organizations to be labeled as a sorority. The term "sorority" was created for Gamma Phi Beta by Dr. Frank Smalley who was a professor at Syracuse University at the time.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
