On Wednesday, Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump made waves in the mainstream media (even by Trump standards) when he took part in the following exchange with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews:
MATTHEWS: Do you believe in punishment for abortion, yes or no, as a principle?
TRUMP: The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment.
MATTHEWS: For the woman.
TRUMP: Yeah, there has to be some form.
MATTHEWS: Ten cents? Ten years? What?
TRUMP: I don’t know. That I don’t know. That I don’t know.
It has been said if you let a person talk long enough, he will divert from his script and his true self will reveal and then the listener will be able to form a true opinion of the speaker. You, Mr. Trump, have finally spoken to millions of women as your true self, and we, along with the world, were listening!
Our bodies, our decisions, our hearts, our lives … Mr. Trump, you sir, have no right to tell any woman what she should do with her life, and only God can truly judge us for our actions. Regardless of what position anyone takes regarding abortion, a woman has a legal right to choose and a legal and moral right to privacy. Regarding politics, I admit, I am not the savviest person when it comes to following the Presidential race, but I know enough to know that should Donald Trump win the Republican nomination, and ultimately the United States Presidency, all of our lives will forever change—and not for the better.
Mr. Trump has been accused of being misogynistic and accused of treating women more as objects and not as equals to their male counterparts. Well, after his very public stance on women and how they should be punished for having an abortion, I too, join millions of Americans in saying Mr. Trump is incapable of representing all people of the free world! His immoral approach to immigration was bad enough, but his views on women and our legal rights are downright reprehensible.
As a result of his obnoxious, disastrous comments on the treatment of women, pro-life organizations have directed more than two million dollars towards Hilary Clinton’s campaign because even they know he is a very dangerous man and doesn’t represent their views on women who have abortions.
Abortion is a hot topic, and we all have to abide by the laws that govern. That I agree with, and I fully understand that legislation could change some day and that a woman could lose her right to choose (I pray that never happens).
Mr. Trump, unfortunately, women suffer rape, incest, domestic violence and many other heinous crimes that result in pregnancy. And you, Sir, a candidate for the Leader of the Free World, just belittled and further victimized each and every one of those women who have been through enough hardship in their lives. Shame on you, Mr. Trump!
Women and young girls who become pregnant with unwanted pregnancies deserve the same right to choose whether or not they will continue their pregnancy. You, Mr. Trump, do not have the right to govern her body, her emotional distress, her financial status nor her legal right to make a choice that is best for her. And, you damn sure don’t have a right to punish her!
A true leader of the free world would seek to punish people who violate laws put forth by legislatures, not punish people who are exercising their legal rights. Mr. Trump is a very savvy businessman who has made a lot of money and is very famous. However, those credentials do not make him suitable to become President of the United States. As a woman, I believe he is a very dangerous man, and he just told the world that we women should be punished for making decisions that pertain to our bodies, our hearts and our minds. Suddenly, the adjective misogynistic is too nice a word, even for him!
Only God can judge us for our actions, and last I checked, a businessman-turned-politician is not remotely close to being God. And even you, Mr. Trump, as wealthy as you are, will never be able to buy or establish those credentials. A woman should never lose her right to choose.
