College is a whirlwind of stress, new experiences, and mass amounts of unfamiliarity especially if you are going somewhere far from home. As I left for my freshman year of college, I knew I would miss plenty of things from my little hometown. I would miss my loving parents, the sense of familiarity, and friends; however I underestimated how much it would pain me to leave my pint sized, canine best friend behind.
As a dog lover, I am aware of the undeniable relationship that forms once you have truly bonded with a dog; this being said, there are many reasons why you should take man's best friend to college. Whether you decide to take 12 hours or 20 hours, college is going to be stressful at times. With many deadlines and papers, stress and anxiety are going to surface, and that is where your dog can help. Your dog may be able to provide some support while you are having your third meltdown of the semester, I know mine does. If you are going to a college where you will not know a single person, why are you even questioning whether to bring your furry friend or not? Dogs have been deemed "man's best friend" for a reason. The social support of a dog is just as important as the emotional. As you go off to college your responsibilities are going to increase. You will be held accountable for every aspect of your life. Why not add puppy caretaker to the list? You will learn to care for something other than yourself without having a wailing child, which I might add is a much better alternative.
There are many reasons as to why you should take your dog on the adventure of a lifetime; however if you do decide to bring him, ensure that you are able to take care of him in the correct manner. Furry friends and college go together better than you may think. Take a chance on your dog, and pray to God that you get your deposit back.
