For those that have ever watched a game of dodgeball or have seen the popular "Dodgeball" movie starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, know it is an exciting and high-intensity sport. The goal of the game is to hit all the opposing team’s players with either a foam or rubber dodgeball. However, the quickest and most effective way to win dodgeball games is to catch the ball so teammates can get back into the game. I will talk more about the rules of dodgeball later. Now, there are two different types of dodgeballs: rubber and foam. Rubber dodgeballs tend to be used with more experienced players, like at dodgeball tournaments, while foam balls are best suited for beginner and intermediate players, like at organized dodgeball practices.
Additionally, there are a lot of different rules and regulations for the game of dodgeball. In certain tournaments or different locations, these rules and regulations can vary. However, the basic rules stay the same. To simplify and break down these rules a bit, here is a video from the International Dodgeball Association, or the IDA, on how to play the game of dodgeball.
Like any other sport or activity, dodgeball requires rigorous practice and training in order to reach success not only as an individual but as a team. Although it is common to see certain players that are very skilled take over a game with precise throws and catches, dodgeball is no doubt a team sport. On a dodgeball team, there should be catchers, throwers and blockers. Blockers are those that are good at blocking incoming balls with a ball in their hand. As shown in the video above, catching an opponent's ball will not only get your opponent out but also bring a teammate back into the game. Players are not invincible, as even the best do get out sometimes. So, without teammates that know how to catch the ball, the best player will often get ganged up on by the opposing team. A balanced, well-assigned, experienced team will often win the most games.
No matter your skill, experience or commitment levels, dodgeball can be a very fun game for everyone. When playing, make sure to remember the five d's of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge!
