Doane College turned University is full of time honored traditions and some are written, while others are just known and passed down from class to class. Have you done all of this? Take this list and make it your own to have the maximum results for your time at Doane!
1. Support the Tigers at sports events.
Try to go to at least one of each. You never what sport you’ll like watching. You might even end up trying out for the team.
2. Go to Stop Day.
Participate in every way possible. Watch the talent show, eat some BBQ, hop into a canoe on the lake, and have fun with friends! Remember to be safe and thank Student Congress.
3. See a play.
Doane’s Theater Department is next-level. With cutting edge plays that’ll make you bust a gut or cry a river, make your way down to the Con sometime.
4. Support your friends at a concert.
The music students have some serious talent. Go to a big concert or even a recital to get a sampling of the beautiful music made daily in Communications.
5. Grab free anything.
Free food, free t-shirts, free puppy petting -- get it all. Take advantage of being a poor college kid by picking up some perks.
6. Participate in Homecoming.
There’s something for everyone in the most spirited week of the year. There are plays, concerts and ceremonies galore. Our Bingo may get feisty, but it’s all fun and games. Not to mention the stellar prizes. The Pep Rally is always a great time watching the different groups put skits on while getting pumped up for the big game. Football brings out all sorts of fans. With an amazing season behind us and a new rival team, next year’s game won’t disappoint.
7. Rush (check out all the groups).
Get to know groups, even if you don’t join. Greek Life is a huge part of Doane’s culture. As a participant or spectator, Greek Week is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.
8. Get involved.
There’s a million ways to get involved on campus. Join a few clubs, work your way into honor societies, or even start your own group! Serve as an exec member to get great leadership experience with a group you care for (it’ll also look good on your resume).
9. Go to Relay For Life.
Year after year, Doane is top notch in raising money for cancer research. This night is one not to miss - games, food, fun and seeing guys dress up as women for Miss Relay. It's 12 hours of walking to help kick cancer’s butt.
10. Sample the local cuisine.
There may not be a lot of options, but they’re pretty great options. Try the taco truck just once. It’s surprisingly amazing. Bonus: food always tastes better at 1 a.m.
11. Pull an all-nighter.
Stay up until sunrise with your best friends. Whether it’s a Harry Potter movie marathon or finishing your group project hours before it’s due, the laugh will make up for the yawns.
12. Take a class for the professor.
You’ll find one professor on campus that you just click with! The way they teach, how they treat the students, or just their personality will hook you in and keep you entertained with learning.
13. Take a study break.
Food always tastes better at 1 a.m. Go on a mini road trip with your friends to Walmart, D’Leons, or even all the way to the vending machines.
14. Get a candid shot with the swans.
Look, but don’t touch. Pose so it looks like you’re petting or holding one while actually being a safe distance away.
15. Find the perfect napping spot.
Whether it’s in Lied, the Learning Commons, or even your best friend’s quad, figuring out the perfect place to get a power nap will save you the time and energy of walking and climbing the dreadful stairs back to your room.
16. Go ghost hunting.
The Con is totally haunted. Ask any student who has ever been there alone after dark, and they’ve had a run in with the ghost. Her name is Emma. She’s pretty chill. Gaylord’s basement is spooky too!
17. Trailblaze on a nature walk
Doane is Nebraska’s most beautiful campus. The woods behind Frees are a hidden treasure. Follow the frisbee golf course or adventure off on your own path. Just bring a friend and your phone, in case you get lost.
