"Profane swearing never did any man any good. No man is the richer or wiser or happier for it." - Richard Lowth
It seems that everywhere we look in society today, profanity is present. From movies to song lyrics to novels and anywhere in between, cursing seems inescapable.
However, despite its immoral reputation, the use of profanity is ever so popular and augmenting. Children are caught saying it at much younger ages and appear to be numbed by the words' meanings. Because they're so accustomed to the crude lingo, they grow up feeling comfortable saying it anywhere and anytime.
Now a part of their daily jargon, curse words slip out without notice. It could be during a job interview or a conversation with a mother-in-law.
But what those who are used to these supposedly taboo words don't realize the power the words have on someone who doesn't curse.
Like me.
I personally don't curse, but I don't care if others do. I'm used to hearing curse words flow from friends' mouths. I'm used to reading them in a book or article. It takes a lot for profanity to bother me.
Despite this, there have been multiple times where friends or acquaintances catch me off guard with their strong slang. I grew up believing that the F-word was only used in passionate, livid anger. HA. Was I wrong or what?
"I can't believe that just F-ing happened!" "That was so F-in funny." "What the F?" "F."
Occasionally, I'll hear the combination of three or more curse words, and that throws me off.
"That F-ing S-faced A-hole." "You're D- F-ing right, B-." "S-, I F-ing love that D- Ba-."
Woah.
Maybe it's because I'm an old soul. I think and act differently than most people my age.
Maybe it's for other reasons.
What about you? Do you curse? Why or why not?
