A cramped box that binds two souls together as they venture through a journey together. No, I’m not talking about a jail cell. I’m talking about the dorm room. Ah yes, the dorm room. For some, including myself, the concept of living in a small room with another person or two scared the hell out of me. Any college freshman remembers the endless advice they received from just about everyone who went to college. “Work hard.”, “Open yourself up.”, “Push out of your comfort zone.” Yeah yeah yeah I heard it all. However, I vividly remember one piece of advice from a friend who recently finished his freshman year. “Whatever you do,” he said, “don’t be the messy roommate.” Something clicked upstairs, “Oh no, I’m on the path to being the slob.” Every since I’ve refused to be the messy roommate and here’s why you should too.
Good luck hosting a chill sesh with a gross room
In the first few weeks of college you’ll walk past more open doors than the rest of the year combined. A comfortable room is the key to making friends. Who doesn’t feel more comfortable in a tidy and organized room?

Mess = Stress
Mess overwhelms the mind with excessive stimuli. When we see, hear, or smell things that are overwhelming our minds work overtime, causing stress. Have you ever tried taking an exam in a noisy room? It doesn’t work so well. One semester of college schoolwork causes more stress than all of high school combined. Do you really need more stress on your plate?
Works better than Nyquil
As previously explained, mess equals stress. If any of you have laid your head on the pillow with a million things on your mind you know how rough that night of sleep was. A clean dorm room allows you to go to bed and wake up knowing where all your items are for the upcoming day.

Pride booster
After all the time spent cleaning your room you take a step back and at that moment it's all worth it. You’ll feel accomplished after the work you put in.
Your room will double in size
Okay not literally, but it certainly will feel as if it did. Without last week’s clothes lying around you’ll be able to maneuver around your room with ease.
You’ll have more time
With everything in it’s place there won’t be clothes in the fridge, pizza on the futon, or yesterday’s assignment in your dresser. You won't spend time digging through clutter to find what you're looking for, therefore saving hours per day.
Show me a tidy dorm room and I’ll show you a hundred that appear as though a tornado passed through. Ask any roommates with tidy roommates, they love it. Sometimes people can get a little excessive, but you’ll never hear their roommate complain the room is too clean. Pay yourself forward and spend some time cleaning, it certainly won’t hurt.
