Let's face it. The world has a ton of issues. Economically, environmentally, politically, and possibly at the base of some of these, religiously. Now, I'm not an extremely religious person, but I am a proud young woman of Jewish heritage and know that it is the right religion for me. It may not be for everybody, and that is perfectly okay. You do you. But in the last few weeks, a lot has happened in this world.
Paris.
Syria.
ISIS making some pretty insane remarks towards the U.S.
The 2015/2016 Democratic Debate (Go Drake.)
And this whole 'controversy' (lol really?) about Starbucks' new Holiday red cups...
And as your millennial, cookie cutter 'white girl,' I do surrender to the stereotype that I am frequent at Starbucks. So much so, that my barista at my local on campus-pre 10 a.m. Bio run knows whenever I come in, I'll grab a Grande Dark roast with a splash of soy milk and some Stevia to sweeten it. But when I received my first plain red cup instead of a red cup with a bunch of snow flakes or polar bears, frankly, I didn't think anything of it. And I mean, who would?
From my perspective, the Starbucks holiday cup is literally just that. A HOLIDAY CUP. It doesn't specify any religion or race, any certain belief or opinion, it just signifies the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year. (Cue Michael Buble to back me up). Which should really be what this time is all about! Celebrating the snowfall, and giving thanks for the people around you and what you do every day that makes you love life.
So when I read that people were getting upset over the removal of the signature decorations on Starbuck's red holiday cups, I was like, "lol what." Are there seriously not more important things we could be discussing?
Winter is truly, the most beautiful, and wonderful time of year, and if you have to spend that season arguing with the most successful coffee company in the world about why they took the polar bear off of their cup, I think there is some reevaluating that needs to be done.
