The summer is the perfect time to catch up on those books you've been trying to read all year! Here are five books that you should actually read:
1. "Memories" by Lang Leav.
Lang is my favorite poet at the moment. This book touches on the ideas of love and loss so delicately. It has a selection of poems from her books "Love & Misadventure" and "Lullabies," as well as newer pieces she has written.
2. "The Anatomical Shape of a Heart" by Jenn Bennett.
This beautifully written book is set in the vibrant, pulsing heart of San Francisco. I love the detail that went into every concept and each distinct, quirky character. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Jack reminds me of Alex Turner. The Arctic Monkeys, anyone?
3. "A Court of Mist and Fury" by Sarah J. Maas.
As someone that has never really been interested in fantasy as a genre, these books are amazing. I'm absolutely in love with this series! "A Court of Mist and Fury" is the second book to "A Court of Thorns and Roses." I enjoyed it more than the first book, and these are some of the best books I've ever read. If you want to be sucked up into a mesmerizing world, this book is for you.
4. "Flygirl" by Sherri L. Smith.
"Flygirl" is a book I read a couple summers ago. Following the life of a Black girl named Ida Mae Jones, it takes place in 1941 during World War II. Her dream of becoming a pilot is hindered by the fact that she's a woman, in addition to being Black. She ultimately makes the difficult decision to pass for White. Ida Mae must live with her choices as she navigates what is now her new reality.
"Hiding one's racial heritage, denying one's family, denying one's self is a heavy burden. And while Ida Mae chases her dream, she must also decide who it is she really wants to be" (Goodreads).
5. "Conversion" by Katherine Howe.
Colleen Rutherford, a high school senior at an all-girls private Catholic school, is competing alongside a bunch of her fellow classmates for valedictorian. With managing to juggle college applications and handling relationships, her class seems to be surviving their senior year fairly well... until her friends all start getting sick, each with bizarre symptoms. One of them loses all of her hair, while Colleen's best friend begins coughing up pins. The only related symptom among them is the rapidly spreading panic. This had me peeking over my shoulder!
Hope you enjoy these reads!
