A college student's two favorite words may just be 'spring break' (well, aside from 'free food'). It's a time for sunshine, relaxation, and a break from the hectic daily routine. Spring break seems to have become a contest of who's going to the coolest destination with the most amount of people. However, here are a few reasons why this year you should ditch Cabo and the Bahamas for something quite different: Grandma's house.
1. Grandma's home cooking
It's no lie that the food from the cafe doesn't always cut it, but at least we don't have to pay for it on a day-to-day basis. When was the last time you had a warm, homecooked meal, for free? Was it Christmas? Thanksgiving, even? Trust me, one week of allowing grandma to stuff you full of your favorite foods will be totally worth it. Forget spending hundreds of dollars in Cancun on your meals, go to grandma's house and the food will be better for a much cheaper price.
2. It's a lot less crowded
Dancing in the middle of Panama City Beach while random frat boys jump on your toes sounds like fun-- for a day maybe. Since spring break is a time to recuperate from the semester and relax, forgive me if a crowded beach in a touristy city just won't do it for me. Good luck finding a spot in the sun and sand at Daytona Beach, but I'd venture to guess that grandma's house in northern Florida might have a few more tanning spots to choose from. Even if grandma doesn't live near the sea, I'm sure you'll be able to get some alone time and head back to school more relaxed than ever before.
3. You kind of miss grandma's lectures
When you go off to college, you experience true freedom for probably the first time. Nobody is there holding your hand anymore telling you to get your homework done, get some extra sleep, or to stop eating Doritos for dinner. While this is great for the first few months, if you're anything like me, you start to miss being taken care of a little bit. While Grandma's constant nagging used to drive you crazy, it'll be nice to have someone watching over you for a week. Whether she's telling you to eat more, go to bed earlier, or take time to relax, I can guarantee that you'll return to campus rejuvenated and ready to take on the final half of the semester.
4. You'll earn bonus points with the rest of the family
While the rest of your cousins are getting drunk in Mexico, you're racking up some brownie points with Aunt Susie and Uncle John. Every holiday, you can bet that they'll bring up how you skipped out on the trip your friends took to Myrtle Beach and spent some quality time with grandma instead. Even though bonus points weren't your intention in this vacation, they definitely don't hurt.
5. Spending time with grandma is actually pretty fun
You might feel a little jealous when you hear of your friends adventures over spring break, but you know that you had just as good of a time. Your grandma has always been your number one fan, and now you can show her that you're hers, too. Whether it's spending the night playing Yahtzee at the kitchen table, or going to Jitterbug with her at the senior's center, the memories you are making this trip will last a lifetime. So this spring break, think about what you're trying to get out of your trip. If it's good food, better company, and a chance to truly relax, skip the expensive destination and go visit grandma instead.
