Distant Sisters

Friends come and go but sisters are forever, no matter how far they are.

There is a saying from an anonymous person that says, “Sisters by chance, friends by choice.” I never really thought about that saying until Nefie came into my life a couple of months ago.

Our friendship started on Tumblr. I remember I was sitting in my dorm room after having a long day and I needed some cheering up. I decided to scroll down my Tumblr search using the keyword "Dersha" and found a story called "Reconciliation" and I immediately fell in love with it, so I did what I normally do with the fanfiction that I read. I wrote a review expressing my honest opinion. To my surprise, I got a response back.

At the time, I had two Tumblr accounts, and I followed Nefie back using my main Tumblr account.

Nefie and I stayed in contact with each other whenever we were online and that was it. I ended up getting a new Tumblr account, one for my Hit The Floor fandom, and the other as a personal one.

A month flew by and I noticed that there was a message in my Tumblr inbox on my second Tumblr from Nefie, and that was where our friendship began.

We messaged day and night and eventually we followed each other on Twitter which was pretty fun. Our messages continued day and night through all hours of the night until I would fall asleep. Nefie lives in Washington state, while I live in Pennsylvania. There is a three-hour time difference from the West Coast where she lives and the East Coast where I live.

After our friendship happened and the more we communicated, the more we both realized that we were like two long lost friends who found their way back to each other. Talking to Nefie was like talking to someone that I have known for most of my nineteen years of life.

In our Hit The Floor fandom,we all say that we are like a close knit family since our show is so popular and vocal on our social media platforms. We all have our friends, our buddies, our “Partner in crime(s)". With Nefie our friendship is different: she is more than a friend to me, she is like my sister. We literally went from Tumblr messaging to tweeting each other on Twitter to following each other on Snapchat.

The first time Nefie and I actually had a face-to-face conversation was on Snapchat when I was on my way home from Home Depot, in my favorite cow shirt. I was also exhausted from writing my outline for my next Odyssey article that I still have yet to discuss -- we’ll cross that bridge at some point, just not today. After a few hours of talking on Snapchat, Nefie and I went back to talking on Tumblr and exchanged numbers so that we could text as well as Facetime each other. That night we talked until it was two in the morning, my time, since I had church in the morning.

We decided to talk on Facetime and we would stay awake until the sun came up on my end, which was about five in the morning. I was never a night owl until Nefie and I started our daily conversations. We actually talk more than my friends at home and I talk, and our conversations always pick up where we left off at. There has not been a day since May when Nefie and I started communicating that we do not talk. Our conversations literally go from talking about our favorite television couples, to discussing ideas for our fanfiction series, to us giving each other little pep talks, and to us giving each other life advice. We can talk for hours about any and everything and not get bored of each other's company.

The people that God places in our lives are not by accident and there is a reason why our paths cross. There is a reason why Nefie and I are so close and why our friendship is so inseparable even miles and miles away. Our friendship, or shall I say sisterhood, is something that I adore and will cherish forever. The daily conversations are what I look forward to when I start my day and that is one of the things I love about her and our friendship. I also love how honest we are with each other.

Nefie is my long distance sister who knows me even down to my stubbornness that not a lot of people can get past, and I could not be any more grateful than I am to have her in my life. I can pinky promise (that is our inside joke) that Nefie will be a part of my life forever.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
