The poem I am about to share came to me at a time in my life when I was experiencing growth in the acceptance of myself. I wrote it as a cry of inspiration to anyone who has felt lowly of themselves, to love who they are, despite what society tells us. Often times, we find ourselves put in a box that we have created and neglect to see the perception of what is around us. Until we are able to step out of that box and perceive the world holistically, will we gain a better understanding of society.
Given the current state of our country, I was reminded of this poem and felt compelled to share it. This being my first article, I thought the timing could not have been more perfect. Nonetheless, here it is.
The Chinks in Our Armor
Some of us are lucky in this life, to get by with just a little, a single chink.
Many of us, however, are granted the privilege of having many.
We may get them all at once.
We may get them in small bursts.
And we may get them periodically.
What makes us, as a human race, unique, is being equipped with the capabilities to handle them in all the different ways that they come.
The Chinks in Our Armor shape us into the people that we are to become.
I would be classified as one who had all my Chinks granted to me all at once. However, there is still more life to live, and many more to come, but I have made a vow to myself. A declaration and statement of change.
That no matter what happens in your life to love freely and with all of your heart. Do not become hardened by past afflictions.
To fight every day of my life believing in, and accepting myself, for who I am (flaws & all).
And only allowing those in my life who can do the same. If you can’t…sorry, but I won’t be the one blamed by your ignorance or your inability/unwillingness to understand.
To fight every day to smile, to find a reason to laugh, or a reason to be happy.
To inspire everyone in the world that no matter the circumstances that happiness is always around.
Let The Chinks in your Armor give you love for all who have suffered. For you never know how painful that Chink has tormented someone’s life.
Judging a person based off of gender, sexuality, job title, or race is completely beyond me…
Because we all have Chinks in Our Armor.
And no one should ever have to suffer because their Chinks are different, too difficult to understand, or something that society tells us not to be.
These little Chinks in Our Armor are what make us individually who we are. Is there anything wrong with that…? No!
Learning to accept the Chinks & flaws of a people is hard, but not impossible.
Acceptance in loving everyone for who they are and the strength, courage, and bravery it took for them to get there is the true measure of cultural & societal revolution.
Embrace the Chinks in Your Armor.
Let the walls fall down.
Be a heart and ear for someone evoking vulnerability, and you will see that accepting the Chinks in Our Armor is not so impossible.
For one day…
They will be what unites us all.
