If you're not familiar with the name Nyle DiMarco, DiMarco is a model who won the 22nd (and final) cycle of "America's Next Top Model" and the winner of Season 22 of "Dancing with the Stars." He's also deaf. He is a spokesperson for LEAD-K (Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids) and also works on The ASL App in an attempt to bring more awareness to Deaf culture and to teach hearing people conversational ASL.
So when the Cleveland Cavaliers contacted DiMarco to sing the National Anthem during Game Four of the NBA Finals, DiMarco gladly accepted.
DiMarco joined Jessica Ruiz and 20,000 fans at the Quicken Loans Arena in singing the national anthem.
DiMarco posted the video on his Facebook page, writing:
"This is one step forward! A Deaf person singing to the national anthem along with 20,000 others in the arena.
Thank you Cleveland Cavaliers for making history with me for 70 million Deaf people worldwide!!!"
Even though the Cavaliers lost this game (which makes this Clevelander sad), I was delighted to see the Cavs using this chance to promote acceptance and change on a national level. National media had already taken note when the Cavs fans sang the national anthem during Game 3 of the Finals, but this took acceptance to a new level.
DiMarco continues to be an inspiration to people of all walks of life, but is especially a beacon of hope to the Deaf community.
One Facebook user commented on this video,
"You are a positive role model and an inspiration to my Deaf pupils. I am a Deaf teacher of the deaf in the UK based in a mainstream school and I am always constantly drumming into them that they CAN achieve. You definitely are one of the people as a Deaf inspirational Achiever on my PowerPoint when I introduce Deaf role models. Thank you Nyle."
DiMarco is an amazing individual and I cannot wait to see what change he continues to spearhead in the future.
