Difference Meaning, Same Words

"It isn't the words themselves that have changed, but the meaning behind them."

Since beginning my sophomore year of college, changes have been prevalent everywhere I've turned. I've gone from relying on my parents, to relying on myself. I've gone from just focusing on homework and my social life to balancing a job on top of that. One of the main differences I've noticed, however, is the difference in the meaning of words and things, since entering this new realm of responsibility. It isn't that the words themselves have changed, but simply the meaning behind them.

My House -> My Parent's House

This is one of the more shocking revelations I've had recently. Now that I am living on my own and in my own house at school, I didn't realize that my home back home, is technically now my parent's house. I don't live at that house full time anymore. I've heard almost every young adult up here refer to that house as their parent's house, and it stunned me into a good reflection period over the fact that this is a reality now, and that I am basically moved out of my childhood home.

Rent -> Rent

I used to rent movies on Netflix each week and get one in the mail, and now I am renting a house. The same word has two completely opposite meanings - one that brings joy, and one that doesn't necessarily bring joy, but a similar word all the same.

Chapters -> Chapters

If you are interested or a part of Greek life, you will understand this comparison. Chapters in books that were needed for school are still prevalent, yes, but chapters have also turned to a new meaning for the world of Greek life. A chapter for a book is no longer the only type of chapter on a college campus.

Homecoming -> Homecoming

With the season of homecoming upon all the university campuses at this time of year, it only seems appropriate to include this analogy. In high school homecoming was all about finding the perfect dress, scoring the best date, and being asked in the cutest way possible to the dance. In college, homecoming is all about supporting the football team, attending the game, but most importantly finding the best pre-game outdoor tailgate on the block.

College is a very exciting time that's filled with new changes, and frankly new definitions to words we already had meanings for. With these new meanings come new responsibilities, but also new opportunities for us to look forward too for the exciting future ahead.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
