How Orlando Reflects Current LGBT Issues

In the aftermath of the most deadly shooting in US History, there has been an outpouring of love and support worldwide showing remorse and solidarity. The Orlando Go Fund Me has raised almost $5.5 million thanks to the contributions of almost 110,000 people. I have seen posts coming from people expressing their sorrow for the tragedy and, for some, showing their support for LGBT folk nationwide. However (and I hate to say 'however'), for every act of kindness, there is one of hate. In fact, the incredible amount of hatred towards LGBT and queer folk is so intense and so, well, hateful, that in some parts of the world, being gay is punishable by death. Being queer, be it in gender or sexual orientation, you are automatically on the hit list of millions of people. Even discounting death as a fate, a queer individual could be sterilized, bullied, physically, verbally, and emotionally abused, face the issue of LGBT youth homelessness, be fired from or not even hired for a job, and, the most popular issue these days, denied the right to get married. It wasn't until last year that this free country of ours allowed same-sex marriage. Only 20 countries in the world have gay marriage legalized nationwide. Only 18 out of our 50 states have clear laws protecting transgender rights, particularly in the workforce. 4 out of every 10 LGBT people say that they were rejected by a family member or close friend. 30% say that they have been physically attacked for being LGBT. 29% say they feel unwelcome in religious environments and places of worship. 21% were treated unfairly at work. Six in every ten LGBT people have been the target of slurs and jokes. Even if not every act of hatred is violent, an act of hate is still an act of hate. Hate only leads to more hate and before you know it, Orlando happens. Although approximately 60% of Americans believe that homosexuality should be accepted by society, that still leaves 40% of Americans thinking otherwise. There are 28 LGBT hate groups in America such as the American Family Association, Westboro Baptist Church, Abiding Truth Ministries, Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, and American Vision. The ever growing support in America is impressive and encouraging, but it is events like the Orlando Pulse shooting that make me realize that we still have so far to go. All these people seem to care more about the fact that it was a tragedy rather than caring about the people actually involved in the tragedy. Where are all the posts on Facebook for LGBT homeless youth, for LGBT suicide and mental illness, for LGBT harassment and bullying, for LGBT abuse and neglect, for really any LGBT issue besides gay marriage? Stonewall is but a distant memory to too many people and it took until the deadliest mass shooting in American history for us as a nation to remember and acknowledge the battle that the LGBT community has been fighting all along. The public seems more concerned about the terrorism aspect and less about the fact that this was a blatant hate crime. The public is more concerned about whether or not the shooter was Muslim than they are about the fact that over 100 people were killed or injured. The public cares more about who's taking their guns than the shockwave of terror felt by the whole LGBT community that has shaped LGBT history. These are people, not statistics. We as a society are so conditioned to be hateful and for that reason, we have become accustomed to hate. Hate is a part of our lives. In an outspoken society of historical rebels, Americans sometimes blur the lines between speaking out and speaking too much. All the hateful remarks and comments you make on a forum or Youtube video fuels the fire in someone else's heart to do the unspeakable. It doesn't fly just saying "pray for Orlando". The LGBT community doesn't want just your prayers. I don't want just your prayers. I want action for my community. Pray all you want but if nothing changes, then all those hashtags and profile pictures will be for naught. We need to create a culture of love where an outpouring of support overpowers the outpouring of negativity. We all want to say spread the love. We all want to say love wins. But with this much hate, what will you do to make sure love actually succeeds?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
