According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, about 18 percent of the U.S. population struggles with anxiety, depression, or both. That’s about 40 million people, and yet, only one-third of people suffering with these issues receive treatment.
I was a bit surprised to realize how many people that I’m close to that struggle with these issues. After reading these statistics, it was less shocking when I realized that most of them struggling were not seeking treatment.
Our society tells us that psychological and emotional disabilities aren’t disabilities. If America can’t see a physical deformity, then they write it off; there’s nothing wrong with you. You’re just looking for attention or being overdramatic.
People just don’t realize how serious these issues really can be. They’re not just made up things with no real-life implications. Anxiety and depression affect people in very real ways and often have physical triggers. Some people get social anxiety and can’t interact fully in public settings, for example. About 15 million people suffer from this type of anxiety.
Depression is often caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, a condition that the individual suffering from it has no control over.
People don’t seem to make the treatment of the other two thirds that are suffering a priority. Again, I think people just don’t realized how serious these conditions are and how much of a positive impact good treatment could have on those who are suffering from them.
I think the first step is for us to stop making those who are suffering to feel as if there is something wrong with them if they admit they need help. There is absolutely no shame in admitting that you need help to cove come anxiety or depression, and if more people knew that, then maybe more people would be seeking treatment.
Another step towards solving these issues is for us to familiarize ourselves with the symptoms of these conditions. Some people may not realize that the reason they feel so sad or anxious is that they are suffering from one of these conditions.
Actually, these conditions often go hand in hand. Nearly half of the individuals diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with anxiety.
Early diagnosis is the best option, especially in children. Because yes, children can suffer from these diseases too. Anxiety disorders affect one in eight children. Children with anxiety disorders are at higher risk to perform poorly in school, miss out on important social experiences, and engage in substance abuse.
Anxiety and depression are very real disorders and have very-real consequences. If you are suffering from one of these or know someone who seems to be, please don't be afraid to reach out for help or encourage your loved ones to seek help. Even if you're not sure, it's always a good idea to get checked by a medical professional. It will make your life, as well as the lives of those around you, so much better.
