There is no doubt that Marilyn Monroe was, and still is today, one of the biggest sex symbols of all time. Her iconic look is now turned into Halloween costumes and her words are used as Instagram captions. But what is with this new obsession of Marilyn? And why do so many young girls look up to her? In many parents’ eyes, they see a troubled star who went down the wrong path of sex and drugs. However, in the eyes of a young girl, they see an inspiration. Hung on their walls, these girls look at Marilyn and see themselves. They see the beauty in the imperfections that grope them like those same imperfections that swallowed the late star.
But why Marilyn? What makes Marilyn Monroe an icon of beauty? With her mother having a severe psychological disorder, living in a foster home, and her own problems with drugs, one might see this star as nothing but troubled and digging her own grave. But no. These hardships and psychological struggles that captured Marilyn’s world only make her more beautiful in today’s society. She was imperfect and beautiful. She was not 6 feet tall and the size of a twig, like today’s models. She was curvy with fair skin and she was her own kind of beauty that every girl inspires to hold.
Her actions and her words mark today’s society in many ways. Arguably, everyone knows of Marilyn Monroe. The name itself rings a bell to people. She has left a mark on the world since the moment she was born. Her movies, her iconic poses and photos, and her breathtaking smile captures all eyes. What else would a girl want in life? Many girls look to Marilyn because they want to feel those feelings that Marilyn displayed. Behind Marilyn’s smile was an endless amount of pain and trouble, but it was very hard to see based on the way she presented herself. This is the kind of mindset that seems to grasp young girls in society today; hiding the pain behind a smile. In a sense, Marilyn is used as a symbol of strength, even now, years after her death.
Marilyn Monroe is not a typical role model due to the way her life spiraled downward. However, her name and image have proven to make a mark on many people. Endless biographies, photos, quotes, and movies of the late star are still trending today. She was, and still is, a star and an example that by no means does beauty represent perfection.
