Just in case you aren’t already a Demi Lovato fan, I have about a million reasons why you should be. The talented singer has recently been in the spotlight for her Tweets regarding feminism and Kesha.
Lovato spoke out in her support for Kesha, who was recently denied the request to cut her contract with Sony after her producer, Dr. Luke, allegedly raped her. Lovato stated it was “frustrating” to see women share their stories, only to be “shot down and disrespected.” Lovato also said she was ready for “self-proclaimed feminists to start speaking out or taking action for women’s rights.”
Celebrities have continuously been speaking out on feminism and calling for action on equality for women. Alongside Demi Lovato, stars like Emma Watson and Taylor Swift have been advocates for gender equality.
It’s certainly admirable these women are fighting for gender equality. In a world where a woman still makes less money for the same job as her male counterpart, we still have some serious work to do as a society. While each woman has her own definition of female empowerment, Lovato’s goes a little something like this: She says empowerment is using your voice to help the voiceless women be heard, and speaking up for other women even when it’s something uncomfortable to speak about. She goes on to state empowerment is about leading other women to make actual changes in our society.
Lovato may be most well known for her upbeat pop tunes, but it’s time we start recognizing that Lovato, alongside others like Watson and Swift, have a point. As women, it’s crucial we work together to bring about real change in our society. Our culture preaches the idea of “loving ourselves” to us constantly, yet the biggest flaw in the system lies in the fact that as women, we’re born and bred to have some initial hatred or jealousy for other women, other people of our kind. I know this because I was one of these women. You look at her and judge her for her ability to wear that outfit with such confidence, or you wish for that body, that hair, those clothes. The constant judgment of others comes with the judgment of ourselves and the vicious cycle only continues.
As women, it is imperative we lift one another up. Life is already hard enough for women, why make it any more difficult? Let’s strive to be helpful to one another, caring to one another and kind to one another.
