It's not all sunshine and rainbows out there.

Why I Deleted Facebook from My Life
Wired

This Monday, I made the decision to quit Facebook for a while. These excerpts are from the video rant I posted publicly on the site before signing off.

"... Due to the absolute ridiculousness I have seen over the past 48 hours - no, not even, it hasn't even been a full day yet - because of what I've seen on Facebook, I am now deciding to leave the app for an indeterminate amount of time. Because I can't post a single status about why I'm proud to be the party I am in this coming election for no other reason than to say that I am proud of it and because I was happy to find other people that are also the party I am, which is independent. It wasn't to get a rise out of anyone; it was not to try to change anyone's opinion of the debate, I just wanted to say that I was proud to be the party I am. I don't know what's so bad about that. No, I was saying in my class today that I found three other people were independent too and that made me happy, and made me really feel like there were other people who had the same views as me... because a lot of people see it as wasting a vote; which I responded to by saying that I view wasting a vote as voting for someone you don't believe in. That is what I see as wasting a vote, voting for someone who you absolutely cannot side with just for the purpose of choosing one party. That is my own personal belief, I don't ask anyone else to do that, and I just - I find it unfair the way that post was responded to. I posted on Facebook around noon... saying that, what I said before, and, naturally, a lot of comments came in about politics and trying to sway me to one side. And I'm like, no, I'm still independent, it's just I don't want to have to make a decision based on just siding with one party; I'm going to choose who I believe is best to do the job, and I don't believe either is. So, I'm going third party. It's my own opinion, it's not an invitation to make the comments that were made. It gets to the point where it's not just debating about things anymore, it's not debating about topics, policy, anything like that. It's insulting someone."

"I would have been fine with it if not for the specific way that these opinions were brought about. I have no problem with people expressing their opinions; I welcome you to express your opinions! if you think that I have no basis for this, go ahead and put it!... Everyone has an opinion and I value that, but if it gets to the point where you are saying it in a way that is insulting the person and not their beliefs... and attempting to demean them, that to me, automatically makes your point eons less valid. And one of those points was made referring to one of my family members! I don't want to have to go on my status and see that one of my family members is being called quote unquote 'incorrectably stupid.'"

"I hate seeing the negativity on Facebook now. I hate seeing that people's opinions are being reduced to the person's character. A person's opinions do not make a person's character. A person's actions and a person's words make a person's character. If you're stating your opinion, go ahead, I'm not going to make assumptions about your character based on your opinion. But if you state your opinion in a disrespectful way towards me, towards people that I care about, towards my family, that is when your point automatically becomes far less valid to me."

"I know probably some of you are equating what I'm saying right now to who I am as a person. Just because I believe certain things, it doesn't make me any less of a good person. I think I'm a good person; the views I have don't make me any less than that... It just means that I have my own opinions and I want to be able to have my own opinions without being bombarded with insults."

"I don't think people realize how much what you say on social media can affect the person behind the screen, and that really is disheartening and disappointing, and I'm sorry to say that is the world we live in now."

"Thank you for those of you who been listening this long, and with that, I bid Facebook adieu."

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
