As a person who's been watching "The Office" since it was airing new episodes every week and owned a few seasons on DVD before Netflix was a thing, I have a very strong opinion on which episodes are the best. Here's my definitive list of the top 15 episodes that I've compiled five years since the finale was first aired:
1. Season 9, Episode 7: The Whale
In this episode from the final season, we get a couple of gems. First of all, we get to see how poorly Andy is doing on his boat excursion which, if you're anything like me, was greatly vindicating because I think Andy's kind of the worst. The main storyline gets back to one of the best frameworks of the show: Dwight's weird quirks. As the women of the office attempt to train Dwight in the art of selling to a woman some great moments are born:
2. Season 8, Episode 11: Trivia
In my mind, this episode was an instant classic. When Andy has to scramble to make up for the sales that he promised Robert California that he'd make, the whole office crew attends a trivia contest they heard about from Oscar at a gay bar in Philly. When they get there they split themselves up into the A team, the backups, and the "just have fun" teams and everything that happens from that point forward is pure gold:3. Season 4, Episode 14: Goodbye Toby
Not only is this a great episode because of Michael's rendition of Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp, but we also get some of the finest and most quotable banter between Michael and Toby during his exit interview before leaving for Costa Rica. Along with all of that, we get the beginning of Michael and Holly's relationship, an insight into just how much Jim is committed to Pam, and the final straw for Dwight and Angela.
4. Season 3, Episode 3: The Coup
This is the episode that I referred to as the "Call of Duty" episode, forgetting how much other great stuff goes on besides that. While Jim is letting his Stamford team down in their office rounds of "team building" Call of Duty, Dwight goes behind Michael's back to Jan for the manager job. What ensues is something that probably everyone asking their boss for time off to go to the dentist has quoted:
6. Season 2, Episode 4: The Fire
This is an old one but definitely a classic on everyone's list. After Michael saves himself from the fire that Ryan accidentally started with his cheesy pita in the toaster oven, the office crew plays games like "desert island" to pass the time while the fire department clears the building. This is an important episode because we see jealousy start to ignite between Pam and Jim, from Pam's side this time, bringing us all one step closer to seeing their relationship come to fruition.
7. Season 1, Episode 3: Health Care
For a lot of people, this is the episode that really got them into the show because the characters start to hit the strides that they're going to be riding on for the majority of the rest of the seasons. When Michael puts Dwight in charge of picking a new health care plan no one is happy about it. We get to see some of the early pranks between Dwight and Jim when Dwight sits everyone in the office down to make sure all the ailments they requested to have covered are, in fact, real ailments. The character development in this episode is also really fun to look back on after watching older seasons.8. Season 7, Episode 8: Viewing Party
This episode is so funny because so much of it is weirdly focused around Gabe, whether it be Michael's insecurity about his rank or Andy's never ending quest to get Erin. While at a viewing party for Glee that Erin and Gabe throw for the office, Michael shuts the cable off only so that he can turn it back on to save the day and Andy eats a powdered seahorse he finds in Gabe's room that he promptly vomits back up all over his bed. Dwight also has a shining moment in this episode when Pam begs him to stay with her "reverse cycling" baby so that she can get some rest while Jim unwillingly feeds pizza and beer to Dwight.9. Season 7, Episode 21: Michael's Last Dundies
This one was a toss-up between Michael's actual last episode and his last performance as Dundies host, and the latter won out for a lot of reasons. Not only is this a good episode to introduce the kind of character that Deangelo is going to be but it also showcases just how much everyone at the office loves and appreciates Michael despite all his quirks. After Erin publicly breaks up with Gabe at the original venue for the awards show and Deangelo nervously throws up in the bathroom, the office crew encourages the show to continue back in the conference room at the office building. After giving out the last few awards, the staff serenades Michael with a rendition of Seasons of Love from Rent that I'm pretty sure still makes everyone cry.10. Season 5, Episode 15: Stress Relief Part 2
In part two of the Stress relief episodes, Michael organizes a roast for himself so the employees of the office can get out all of their frustrations against him. However, he almost immediately gets his feelings too hurt when the roast gets into full swing and runs away to feed the birds in the park in a black turtle neck, only to return to roast everyone back. Boom, roasted. Not only is this episode hilarious, but also very sweet with a classic Jim and Pam moment.11. Season 2, Episode 12: The Injury
This is definitely one of the show's finest moments, showing off not only Michael's weird affinity for Ryan but also showing what Dwight could be like if he wasn't so odd. After Michael burns his foot on a George Forman grill, he takes it upon himself to teach the office what it's like to be disabled while completely ignoring a concussed Dwight after he crashed his car to try to come to Michael's aid.12. Season 9, Episode 23: Finale
In my opinion, this is one of the finest finales that I've ever seen. After a time jump between episode 22 and 23, we get to see members of the office all come back together for not only Dwight and Angela's wedding but also for the panel to conclude the documentary. Everyone's characters are tied up neatly by the end, including a visit from Michael himself for Dwight's wedding. All in all, I still cry every time I watch this and my heart gets warm every time I think of it.13. Season 5, Episode 14: Stress Relief Part 1
The cold open for this episode will go down in television history for the rest of time, I'm sure. After Dwight fakes a fire to test the office's emergency preparedness, Stanley has a heart attack, Dwight mutilates a Red Cross CPR dummy and Andy shows Jim and Pam a pirated movie where Jack Black and Cloris Leachman hook up. Even people that have never seen The Office have most likely seen parts of this episode and cracked up enough to look into watching the show more fully.14. Season 4, Episode 9: Dinner Party
This episode really goes to show how well a writer's strike can go in a show's favor. Dinner Party was the first episode after the hiatus due to the writer's strike and fans like me were not disappointed. After Jim and Pam get roped into attending a "couples only" dinner party along with Andy and Angela at Michael and Jan's condo, the party is crashed by Dwight and his former babysitter/lover and many quotable moments follow. We get to fully see how unstable Jan and her candle business are and we're introduced to Jan's assistant, Hunter's, music which I think we're all the better for, right, babe?
15. Season 4, Episode 1: Fun Run
Even Mindy Kaling, writer, director, and actor on the show said that one of the funniest moments in TV in her mind was the moment that Michael said to the camera crew in his car "I feel very blessed" and immediately hit Meredith with his car. This episode is one hilarious moment after another from then on, with Andy's nipple chaffing, Pam walking in on Michael changing in his office, Michael finding solace in the fact that he ran Meredith down because she was able to be treated for possible rabies, and then the rabies fundraising run itself. Not only is this comedy gold, but this is also the episode where the audience finds out that Jim and Pam are finally dating! This is the first episode of the show that I saw and even without any of the context that I later got after watching all of the episodes in chronological order, it was still one of the funniest things I had ever seen.
