As Americans, as the descendents of immigrants, we must protect those most vulnerable during this time.

This country has a history of being unkind to Mexicans. Itā€™s an ugly truth, but a truth nonetheless. During the Great Depression, thousands of Mexicans were scapegoated and blamed for the lack of valuable jobs and deported because of it. Many were American-born citizens, some who had never even been to Mexico.

The mistreatment of farm workers pushed Cesar Chavez to create the National Farm Workers Association. Although a union was created and awareness was brought to the issue, the exploitation of farm workers happens to this day. Vulnerable people work long hours for little pay under the threat of being persecuted for their immigration status.

Anti-immigrant status is nothing new in this country, and neither is anti-Mexican sentiment. Itā€™s what Donald Trump based his campaign on; itā€™s what won him the presidency. One of Trumpā€™s main focuses right now is repealing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Act, alternatively known as the DREAM Act. This offers immigrants who were brought over as children a permit to work and attend school. It is not a free ride ā€” it costs money and DREAMers have to pay taxes, just as any other person living here. What the DREAM Act offers is an opportunity to make a better life in America. While DACA covers immigrants from many countries, Mexican immigrants are often targeted when discussing reasons to repeal DACA, calling back to Trumpā€™s infamous speech where he called Mexicans ā€œrapists and criminals.ā€

Trump wants to take this protection away, and we canā€™t let that happen. A simple text to 50409 will send a letter to your representative, asking them to defend DACA. America was built on immigrants, and we donā€™t get to close the doors because of xenophobia. The Statue of Liberty reads, ā€œGive me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!ā€

As Americans, as the descendants of immigrants, we must protect those most vulnerable during this time. We must #DefendDACA.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast ā€œBirthdayā€ on anyoneā€™s birthday. I knew all of the words to ā€œBack In The U.S.S.Rā€ by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. Iā€™m not someone to ā€œfangirlā€ but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
