It seems as if the entire beginning of the second semester revolves around spring break. The gym is packed to the a point where you are forced to work out in your living room. You see everyone gnawing on nothing but carrot sticks and lettuce chunks and starting detox packages. This is the time when you can look up and see girls in class on their laptops looking for new bikinis in preparation for the debauchery of spring break.
Where did this all come from? Why is it that spring break makes you think of wild beach parties and traveling? There must be someone to blame for giving it the reputation it has. To the ancient Greeks and Romans, spring was the season of fertility and awakening and was celebrated at the same time as Dionysus or Bacchus the Greek and Roman gods of wine. See the connection? Blame the Greeks and Romans.
The idea of “spring break” has evolved into the image of a young, crazy, wild, and tropical frenzy. The spring break aesthetics began to take notice in 1986 when MTV launched its first spring break special from Daytona Beach. Streaming the craziness live was all it took to ignite the mass flocks of teenagers and college kids to the shores of Florida to rage in the sun or even more south to Mexico where drinking age is lower.
College students everywhere have been taking advantage of the glorious 7 days of freedom and insanity. Take advantage of the four years of spring breaks you are given. Once you graduate, that’s it. No one wants to see a grad student on the shores of PCB featured on girls gone wild. Hope you all have a spring break to remember (or not).
