Ah, spring break. The perfect time for a vacation in Cancun, a dip in the pool, and a margarita in your hand. Or in other cases, a time where you spend a week at home, most likely in a place colder than the Caribbean, where the lakes are frozen over and beaches are closed. And since there's nothing too fun to occupy your time, you most likely have a list of ways to be productive this spring break. After accomplishing these things, you'll be ready to come back to school, refreshed and ready to finish off the semester! However, your expectations may not align with reality....
1. Expectation: Finish your homework.
I guess they call it homework for a reason. Being at home means that you won't get distracted from your friends and events happening on campus, which gives you time to focus. You finally have the chance to show your professor the diligent student you really are!
Reality: Play on your phone.
Do you really have to finish this 300-page book in one week? You take a break every chapter to play on your phone, and then the break happens every ten pages...then five pages...then you just close the book.
2. Expectation: Explore new restaurants and coffee shops in town.
It's time to explore your city! You can check out new stores that opened while you were away at college, and catch up with what's new in your hometown.
Reality: Stay in and watch Netflix.
A meal at a restaurant is about $20 per person. Netflix is $7.99 per month. Staying in is cheaper. Going out also requires putting on pants.
3. Expectation: Work out.
Maybe the weather is nice enough for a run in the park, or you have a gym membership, or you can sign up for a one-week free trial at the gym. No matter what, you have the opportunity to wake up early every morning and work out. Goodbye flab, hello abs! Maybe your friends won't even recognize you when you get back to campus.
Reality: Sleep in.
What's more comfortable? Your bed, or a treadmill? Did you know that the average person burns 0.5 calories per pound, per hour while sleeping? That means that a 100-pound person burns 500 calories from ten hours of sleep. Your bed might as well be a treadmill...right?
4. Expectation: Hang out with your friends from high school.
It's refreshing to catch up with old friends and find out what everyone's been up to, and to also tell them about how college has been treating you lately. Reminiscing on the old days really shows you how much you've grown since graduation, and these friends were there from the start.
Reality: Hang out with your parents
It seems like every college has a different spring break, and a lot of your friends probably won't be home when you're home. Instead, you stay home and hang out with your parents, and you end up having a blast. Your parents were actually the ones there from the beginning, and being at home with no stress from school or other commitments means that you devote most of your time to them. You don't really want to be anywhere else, because where else can you eat your mom's home-cooked meals?
No matter where you end up this spring break, you get the chance to relax and unwind from the hectic semester. You deserve the break! Fun can be found in the simplest of places, just like this puppy on a baby swing at the park:
