The first debate between our final two presidential candidates took place last night and things got interesting. To start, Hillary said she wants to invest in you and your future, small businesses, raising minimum wage, and equal pay. Trump said that he believes we are losing everything to Mexico and China, he vows to cut taxes and stated that he hopes to bring companies and jobs back to the US.
The first bit of shade thrown was not even five minutes into the debate, where Clinton criticizes Trump’s plans and calls them “trumped-up trickle-down economics,” before saying he had received a 14 million dollar loan from his father. Donald replied by saying, “My father gave me a very small loan." (Side note: if one million dollars is a small loan can you give me a sixteenth of that? Yes? No?)
Trump then went on to criticize Bill Clinton's actions (why that is relevant because his wife, not him, is running for president is beyond me) while also picking apart Clinton's actions while in the public eye. Then he continuously interrupted her while she was trying to her defend herself. The housing crisis was brought up, as were some tax returns and emails. Don't know what the tax return and email issues are? Please, tune into any news station and you'll hear about one or the other within five minutes. Hillary did admit that using a private server was a mistake, she took responsibility, so props to her for learning from her mistakes.
Trump boasted his presence in multiple states while Clinton, who is overcoming pneumonia, came back with saying she was preparing for the debate and to be president. Trump went on to support the stop-and-frisk police strategy (which, to remind you, is a Terry stop, and can be illegal if the person does not resemble a suspect, and it is also a form of racial profiling). Clinton was asked if she thought police officers are biased, and she said she thinks all Americans are biased. “I think unfortunately too many of us in this great country jump to conclusions about each other,” she said. Obama's birth certificate came up, so did ISIS, and everything else you would expect to come up between these two.
Here's the thing. You can't pick someone to vote for based only off of these debates. Get educated (and check your facts here). Read their websites (Clinton's here and Trump's here) and make a decision that way. Don't want to read? Try this website. And finally, REGISTER TO VOTE. If you don't register if you don't exercise this right, then how can you complain when you didn't use your voice? Not sure if you're registered or what to register? Click here. Seriously, if you do nothing else, if you take nothing else from this article, at the very least register to vote and make an educated decision.
