Dear Shonda,
You and I need to have a serious conversation. I understand that it is difficult to come up with unique and exciting story lines when you are in the 12th season of a show, but it's time to cut Meredith Grey a break. This poor woman has been through more in one season, than most people go through in their entire lives. There comes a point where enough is enough and I think we reached that point after the epic plane crash episode. But still, you insist on making Meredith suffer season after season, and the once bubbly intern from season one has become a grouchy and miserable Medusa. And who can blame her after everything she has been through these past 12 seasons?
*spoilers ahead*
1. Grew Up With Awful Parents
Let's start from the beginning of Meredith's troubles, her parents. Her mother was a workaholic who never thought she was good enough and her father was absent. Fast forward to the start of season one, Meredith's mother also has Alzheimer's and eventually dies, but not before letting Meredith know she still is a disappointment. Meredith's father pops back into the picture, slaps her in the face for not saving his wife, and then eventually kicks the bucket, too.
2. Falls In Love With A Married Man
It was love at first sight when Derek and Meredith first locked eyes, but of course he was actually married and his wife decided to visit Seattle right when things were getting serious. So poor intern Meredith had to watch the man she loved choose another woman over her, even after she gave him the "choose me" speech.
3. Almost Gets Blown Up
Leave it to Meredith to accidentally put her hand in a Bomb Cavity in order to save a patient. Meredith contemplates life for a bit while holding onto a bomb that may end her life at any moment, while everyone else evacuates the hospital. Finally, the bomb is removed and it seems that Meredith has left this situation unscathed, well until Coach Taylor blows up all over her.
4. Almost Drowns
Meredith's life gets pretty gloomy for a bit (she better get used to it) and she decides to basically let herself drown after she gets knocked off a ferry while saving a patient. It seems that this is the end for Meredith as she is basically dead on the table, but luckily heroic Christina Yang demands that the doctors try once more to bring her back to life and it works. Oh, but while she's unconscious and in this weird afterlife, her mom dies, too.
5. Loses Her BFF George
The death of George was just the beginning of Shonda's beloved character hit list. Meredith was the first to realize that the John Doe they were trying to save, was actually one of her best friends. Sadly, George didn't make it, but he did make the long list of people who die that Meredith loves.
6. Watched Derek Get Shot
This episode was so intense because we already knew Shonda would totally kill off any character. Meredith has to watch from afar as a vengeful husband of a deceased patient shoots Derek. It was quite possible she was about to lose the love of her life in this episode, but instead she had a miscarriage...nice, Shonda.
7. The Plane Crash
After this episode and the one that followed, I was not sure I could go on with watching Grey's. Of course, I did though. Meredith not only survives a horrific plane crash, but also loses her half-sister in the process. After they just really became family, Lexie dies a terrible death and Meredith has to even hear her get eaten by animals during the night. Mark Sloan also dies as a result of this plane crash, which is just an all around crime.
8. Almost Dies While Giving Birth
After a storm shuts off the power in the hospital, Meredith must have a C-Section performed basically in the dark. After the procedure, she has complications and starts to bleed out on the table. In typical Shonda fashion, Bailey comes to the rescue and saves Meredith just in time.
9. Is Separated From Her "Person"
After finally making up after a serious fallout, Cristina and Meredith prove that they are indeed soulmates. Of course, Cristina then leaves to work in Zurich and Meredith loses her best friend and her person.
10. Loses Her Husband
In a typical Shonda fashion, Derek's death is a long and heart wrenching one. Even though Derek had been in D.C. for months and had cheated on Meredith briefly, it seemed that their love would continue to persevere. Alas, that was not the case and Meredith was left widowed with two children and a third one on the way.
11. Is Almost Killed By A Patient
Finally, we come to the midseason premiere, where Meredith almost dies after being brutally beaten by a patient. It is at this point that I am really questioning how much longer I can watch this character suffer. After all that she's been through it's almost desensitizing to see her on the brink of death once again. Shonda needs to give Meredith some bliss in her life, and no I am not talking about another sister.
