A Letter to My Hometown Best Friends

Dear Best Friend,

You know exactly who you are. You must be super weird because otherwise, we wouldn’t get along so well. I get jealous when I see you post with your school best friends and I’m not there. I miss you.

I don’t know where I’d be without you. We formed a bond at such a young age that it freaks me out when I think about how long we’ve truly been friends. I love having a second family because I have you and your family. I can literally show up at your house and walk straight in and no one would question it, and you can do the same at my place. We’ve been through so much together. Middle school, high school, hurricanes, relationships, breakups, and struggling with splitting the bill (every freaking time!). At this point, you know so much about me, you can’t leave even if you wanted to. This friendship is like the FBI, you’re in too deep to quit – sorry (not sorry) but you’re stuck with me for life.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m sorry for how I looked pre-2012, and that’s when you got to know me so you clearly must love me for my personality. You’re the best, it’s right there in your title of “Best Friend”. We used to own so many “Best Friend” pieces of jewelry from Claire’s that I couldn’t keep count of which piece belonged to which best friend, granted I have lost them all in recent years.

I love having my most solid support group in a place I will always call home. I love knowing that we can go months without talking, make a plan to hang out, and pick up right where we left off without skipping a beat. I love how comfortable I am with you. I love that I don’t have to ever care about how I look in front of you because there will never be any judgment. I love your mom – actually, I love your whole family. I love living vicariously through you every once in a while. I love our bake and movie nights. I love our shopping days spent at the mall. I love the nights we go out to dinner. I love the nights we go out to the bars. I love everything we do together. Most importantly, I love you.

You’re dabomb.com. You’re amazing and funny. You’re my go-to person.

I would do anything for you and I’m so grateful for our friendship and for you.

Sincerely,

Your Lifelong Friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
