My Dear Sweet Love,

I love you more than all the stars in sky. I still have many years before I finally get to see your tiny face for the first time. But before I know it you’ll be here, and then you’ll be grown in a blink of my eye.

They say nothing is stronger than a mother’s love. And even though you aren’t here yet, I believe it. I would do anything and everything for you. As your mother there are a great many things I hope I get to teach you, and there are many things I hope you get to experience.

I Want To Teach You Patience

You’ll learn that your mother is not a patient woman. I fret over little things all the time. And I always have to have a plan. So teaching you to be patient might be the hardest thing I teach you. But I want you to know life doesn’t need to be rushed. Don’t wish your life away. I’ve done that, three years ago I couldn’t wait for the day that I was graduating college - I just wanted to be done with school - and now I’m a college Junior. I just can’t believe how fast time flies; I’ve done so much wishing and begging that I honestly haven’t enjoyed the ride. I will teach you how to sit back and enjoy life.

I Want To Share An Obsession With Barbie

So many people claim Barbie is a bad role model for little girls, and I never want you to think that Barbie is perfect and you have to look like her to be perfect - no one is ever perfect. But when I was a little girl, I didn’t get to play with Barbie dolls. I didn’t have many toys as a little girl. I don’t want to spoil you, but I want you to be able to have all the toys I never did. And listen, if you like playing with plastic dinosaurs more than Barbies I’m okay with that. I just can’t wait to play with you.

I Want You To Know Jesus

Without Jesus, I wouldn’t be your mother. So many things in my life would not be the way they are without the Lord. And there is still so much that I have to learn about God - but I want to teach you all the ways that Jesus is wonderful. I want to teach you that God doesn’t hate anyone - that he loves everyone, no matter who or what they are. I want you to be brave enough to spread the word of God and proudly proclaim that you are his.

Your Mental Health Is Important

Never, ever, ever let school, or your friends, or a boy, cause you mental stress. I don’t care if your SATs are the next morning, if you need a break you take a break. One bad grade will not make me, or anyone else who cares about you, love you any less. I will always be available to talk with you, about anything you’re going through. Your thoughts and feelings are not unimportant, I never want you to feel that way. I don’t want you to go down a dark path, feeling like you have no one to talk to. There will come a time when you probably won’t want to share everything with me but I hope you’ll always know that no matter what is weighing you down, I will help you carry it.

Get Involved

Looking back on my high school experience the one thing I regret is not being involved. I had a good time in high school, but there were so many days that I went home and stayed home. Not that I want you to be out all the time! I want you to be in clubs, play sports, do extracurriculars, and volunteer. But I don’t want you to over do it. Don’t be afraid to go to the school dance, or run for class president. You might think it’s “uncool” but one day you’ll learn that “cool” has many definitions.

Fall In Love

I will never hold you back from falling in love, even if you are just sixteen years old. I fell in love at sixteen, and it’s been the best ride of my life. Just promise me you’ll never settle for someone who doesn’t deserve you. That being said, I will let you know my opinions of the people you date. Fall in love with someone who makes you a better person, some who motivates and inspires you.

Listen, my love, never be ashamed of who you are. Always be honest. Laugh often. Hug often. Love often. Find your favorite book. Your favorite song. Your favorite holiday. Your favorite game. Your favorite season. Be confident. Be ambitious. Be corny. Be exactly who you want to be.

Much love,

Mama

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
