To the incoming high school freshman:

Welcome to the next four years of your life. It's finally here: high school. The place that you've seen in movies, read about in books, and dreamed about since elementary school. You have many expectations and are anxiously awaiting your first day at the place you will spend your next four years.

Anxiety, excitement, fear, they is all setting in. New school, new schedule, new faces. It can all seem overwhelming and unbearable. But you will get through it. These next four years will be some of the best.

High school is a time for you to branch out and discover who you truly are. Join that club you were always interested in but were always scared of what people would think. Try out for the team you always watched your older sibling compete with. Audition for that role that you believe you were born for.

You'll regret it if you don't.

People say that high school is a time for reinvention. It's a new school, new expectations, new responsibilities, new faces. But it doesn't mean it has to be an entirely different YOU. Don't be afraid to be who you truly are, because I promise you will meet people just like you.

High school has a ton to offer, so make sure you take advantage of every possible thing it throws your way. Football games, dances, parties, they are all a part of the experience. Don't be afraid to try something new and make yourself a little vulnerable.

Failure is a part of any experience. Every high school student has heard a teacher say "failure oftentimes makes success sweeter." It's true. Aim big in high school. It sets the tone for your path to success.

There will be moments when you feel like high school is weighing you down and there's no way you can get everything done. That's normal. High school isn't meant to be easy. It's supposed to challenge you mentally, physically, and emotionally. And it will.

Take pride in that challenge. You'll be a better and stronger person because of it.

Figure out your work ethic, try new ways to study, and don't procrastinate. Teachers know when you didn't put your best effort into your work. But don't fret, they are they to help you succeed in every way possible.

Your parents are there to lean on, not push away. They have been there before and only want what is best for you.

Most importantly, enjoy it. High school is a time for reinvention, for new experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. Enjoy every second of it.

All my best,

A graduating high school senior

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
