I Was Scared To Tell People I'm A Republican But Today, That Changes

"We are tired of holding our tongues and keeping our mouths shut because we know the left will bully us for our opinions." — Rachel Wahlin

I Was Scared To Tell People I'm A Republican But Today, That Changes

For my entire life, I have been biting my tongue, sitting there quietly while Democrats made me feel bad for being a Republican. It is an issue that surrounds me every day. Most if not all of the time I just nod my head and take it. In fact, I'm willing to bet that a good majority of the people in my life don't even know that I am Republican.

But it's time I stand up for what I believe in, no matter what it costs.

I've often feared speaking out about being a Republican due to the fear of being treated differently. Whether it is at school, with my friends, or at work I always felt like the repercussions were far too large. Even as I write this article right now, I am genuinely scared of what will happen once this gets posted and that's the scariest thing in the world. To be scared of expressing your thoughts in a country that was built on the concept of free speech is unheard of, but yet here we are.

Now I'm not trying to start a war, you are entitled to your opinion, but I believe that a silent majority of people are Republicans or support Republican values. We just don't speak openly about it for fear of judgment. Trump has silently gained millions of dollars for his 2020 campaign. People support clearly support him, but they are scared to admit it because of the hate they get in return. We're not saying that everything Trump has done is correct, but you cannot argue the fact that what he has accomplished in these last four years is remarkable. And the fact that Republicans are scared to express their opinions needs to change. We should not have to live in fear for what we believe in especially when it is supported by evidence of making the country better.

Another thing I want to make very clear here is that just because someone is a Republican does not make them a horrible human being. We are not "racist," "homophobic," or "nazis." We are Americans that love our country, the people in it, and what it stands for.

America is the best country in the world. We pride ourselves on equal rights for all, but yet Republicans face discrimination every day. So next time you want to threaten me about my political views, think about what you are doing and what you are supposed to stand for. You may not like my opinion but you have to respect it, just like I respect yours.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
