Dear Brock Allen Turner,
On November 5, 2014, at a swim meet against the University of California, you received a time of 51.45 in the 100-yard backstroke. You received 6th place.
On January 18, 2015, you raped an unconscious woman behind a dumpster. You received only six months.
Both pieces of information can be found in the same article, and so many similar articles like it. Apparently, the fact that you are an All-American athlete is supposed to guilt me into thinking that the crime of rape that you committed is of a lesser-caliber; that the photo used instead of your mugshot, you know the one, you're wearing a suit and tie, flashing that Stanford-bound smile, is supposed to lead me to believe that you're not such a bad guy. Well, Mr. Turner, your swimming stats and posh picture will not fool me. I know what you are, you are a rapist.
You were convicted of three counts of sexual assault, and given only six months in a county jail for your crimes, Judge Aaron Persky saying "A prison sentence would have a severe impact on you." And while I wish you were locked away, held in the confines of a six by eight foot cell for much longer than the time you have been given, you will suffer a different kind of Hell upon your release. Your photo has been plastered on every social media platform in existence. Mr. Turner, the world knows you and what you have done, and while the justice system has failed the victim, I assure you, we will not. Your age will not be mistaken for immaturity. You will look to your hands and forever see the "foreign objects" used to ruin a young woman's life. Your actions will not be dismissed on the grounds of intoxication. Your past triumphs will not mask the severity of your crimes.
The papers paint you as a young adult who had so much potential. Did you think of her potential as you thrusted yourself onto her unconscious body? Did you think of her family as you exposed her to the world? Did you think of her at all? Of course you didn't, and the media will continue to portray you as the Stanford boy with talent lost, but I will see you, and I will ensure that the world sees you as the monster that you truly are. No longer will we allow headlines such as "Stanford Star Sentenced to Six Months" or "All-American Athlete Found Guilty" to flood our NewsFeed, but instead, we will call you what you are; a convicted rapist. Your Olympic dreams have died, your freshman year at Stanford is nothing but a memory, your swimming statistics are irrelevant. You will be nothing more than a sex offender.
The world will not soon forget you, Brock Allen Turner. Remember that.
