Dear America,

If only we fought just as hard to understand as we do to disagree.

Dear America,
Anna Cunico

Dear America,

I feel like I need to share a few opinions of the hatred towards our wonderful country that some people are expressing.

First off, it's not our country that is the issue—it's the people, and I am NOT talking about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. I am sick and tired of hearing about how "Our country sucks," and how, "Americans don't have any rights." For anyone out there feeling this way, I recommend you take a look at our Bill of Rights. (I linked it so you can take a look, just in case you are unaware.)

Lately in the news, a majority of people have been protesting about our new president, which is fine, you have the right to do so. Although, I am curious why students and many adults are not at school or at your jobs? Are you really protesting our new president because you are offended and your feelings are hurt? Do you realize how damn lucky you are to live in a country where you can actually go to school and get an education, as well as get up to go to work every day earning money to spend however you want? I just wish people were as motivated to go get a damn job or do something useful with all of their energy. Like I said previously, I have been watching a few of these protests, and quite frankly I am not mad, but disappointed. However, if America wants to lower the good ol' obesity rate, they should really start protest jogging and not marching, a few could use to shed a few pounds while they're at it.

Oh, and the audacity of burning the American Flag? Need I remind all of you ignorant people of all the soldiers, and loved ones that have died for our freedom, our right to vote, our right to bear arms, our right to freedom of speech, just so you could burn that precious flag. Next time, think of the family that is getting a folded up flag instead of their son, daughter, husband, or wife coming home.

I really don't care who you voted for. It is over with. It is done. Now let's start acting a little more humane.

It's time to start recognizing how privileged you are and how lucky you are to live in such an amazing country. Let's stop bashing on America and our newly elected president because it is now inevitable, and it is getting old.

So, why am I still proud to be an American?

We are all different.

It amazes me that now matter what, no one is the same. We all have different backgrounds, traditions, and stories. That in itself is astonishing.

We're still the land of the "American Dream."

Anything is possible. You can do anything and be anything. I have seen so many people build themselves from nothing to believe that our country's got a thing for the underdogs.

We have freedoms that people in other countries only dream about.

I can write and say whatever I want, about who I am and what I believe in. We live in a country where you can get a job, whether or not I come from the high-end social class or the color of my skin or my gender. I can go to church where I want and marry who I want without fear of being persecuted by the government. Yes, our country has its flaws, but we always come out optimistic.

With all of this being said, nothing about politics, nothing about recent tragedies, our nation is beyond blessed with such an amazing variety. We don't have a perfect union, but it's the best the world has to offer.

"We are blessed with the opportunity to stand for something-for liberty and freedom and fairness-and these are the things worth fighting for, worth devoting our lives to."-Ronald Reagan

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
