An Open Letter To 2016

Will this year be better than the last?

An Open Letter To 2016

Dear 2016,

You are young, hip even. A few days old and everyone is still getting used to you. Most likely for the next month or so people will be awkwardly changing fives into sixes when writing the date and will say "Wow, I can't believe it's 2016" an obnoxious amount of time. It always exciting when a new year comes around because it seems to have so much potential. This year will be better than the last is something that everyone tells themselves just as the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Day. Well 2016, can't that be true? This year rather than trying to solve every single issue that arises or has plagued the world for long periods of time, what about just making 2016 better than last year?

2015 was a good year in some ways. People like Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai was able to share her words with the world in order to promote peace and education. Jamie Brewer became the first model with Down Syndrome to walk down the runway in New York Fashion week. And some world conflicts were addressed and took steps toward better relationships abroad. Not too shabby, but it wasn't all so peachy.

in 2015 there was hundreds of news stories about mass shooting, issues with police, and racial violence all of the U.S. Violence continued all over the world and unnecessary deaths were rampant.

So 2016, here's a proposition: Let's make you better than last year.

Instead of 2016 being about money, power, conflict or death, it could be about the things that people will look back and be happy about. It could be about beauty, knowledge, learning, solutions and compassion. Most of the time, people think promoting peace and compassion come off as weak and flowery, all too unrealistic for the modern world, but it's not impossible.

In order to better explain what I mean, here are some things that could happen in 2016 that would be much better than last year:

1. Joseph Gordon Levitt, Chris Pratt and Ryan Gosling would team up to make a charity that helps underprivileged schools raise money for supplies.

2. A town filled with dogs would open so that people struggling with anxiety and depression could go on retreats and hang out with pets instead of people for a change.

3. Everyone on Earth would get at least one meal a day passed out by none other than the four remaining members of One Direction.

I am just spit balling here. Obviously this can't all be done, and that's alright, but making this year better than the last sounds cool with me. Does it sound cool with you, 2016?

Sincerely,

People of 2015

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
