The dress code in schools has been a hot topic lately. Whether you agree with it or not, it does not seem like much is being done to eliminate dress codes. Maybe that is because dress codes are actually really important. We make a bigger deal out of them than they really are. Here are some reasons why we should stop fighting the dress code and just live with it.
1. What you wear can be distracting. This is kind of an obvious statement. But I am not talking about girls wearing tank tops and showing some shoulder skin. The thing is, if there was not a dress code, I have a feeling people would be showing a little bit more than just their shoulders. Let's face it, girls look at guys and what they are wearing just as much as guys look at girls. If skin is showing, someone is going to look. Wearing revealing clothing is going to distract those of both genders, it is just how our minds work.
2. Your comments are distracting. It is not always the clothing that is the distraction. It is the fact that you or someone else are probably going to comment on the fact that you're "breaking the dress code" or "dress codes are stupid." If there were not any dress codes, you and others are still going to make comments about what you are wearing. Let's talk about the scientific theory in school rather than how you or someone else is rebelling against a dress code.
3. Dress codes really are not that big of a deal.It really should not be that hard to obey a dress code. Yes, we may not get to wear exactly what we want, but there is always after school for that! There are some restaurants that even have dress codes and we do not seem to have a problem obeying that. When you are a part of a sports team, you are required to dress a certain way, but I do not seem to hear many complaints against that either. As soon as you get home, you can always change in to something that you prefer to wear.
4. It does not just stop at clothes being revealing. Without a dress code, not only would people be able to wear as little or as much clothing as they want, but it also would allow students to be able to wear clothing that may say or support something that is offensive to others. Once again, "distracting." School should be a learning environment, not one where people should feel offended by another person's clothing, or parents have to worry about what their child is wearing to school.
Yes, there may be a day when dress codes are banished from all schools, but until then, just deal with it and obey it. When we decide to dress how we want instead of obeying a dress code maybe we should ask ourselves why exactly we are choosing to wear it. Is it to fight the system? To get a reaction out of people? Or simply because you really like the outfit? Whatever the reason may be, remember that there are more hours in a day than just school hours. Save it for those after-school hours.
