The difference between a good day and a bad day is breathtaking. Truly, I have no clue how it is possible that these two things can be so opposite because, in the end, they are both just a day. Yet the difference is astounding. One might compare that difference to Britney Spears before and after she shaved her head, or Lindsay Lohan pre and post breakdown. I could so easily continue with the celebrity references, but for the sake of your time and the length of this article, I will refrain.
But seriously, it’s like Vince Vaughn acting in "Wedding Crashers" versus his performance "True Detective." Too soon? Alright, I’m done now. The difference is overwhelming. When I have a bad day, it’s like nothing in the world could possibly bring me out of it. I get in a terrible mood and every person who has known me for even a little bit can tell something is wrong.
And then there are my good days. Oh boy, I love the good days. Whether it’s waking up with time to shower and get a cup of coffee or just getting a good grade on a test that I studied hard for, the good days are the best days. A lot of people don’t really see the good days like I see them. Here is why.
Before I came to school at KU, I had a lot more bad days than I should have. This wasn’t for any one specific reason, but it was for a lot of different little reasons. The smallest reasons for unhappiness are the ones that build up and create bad days. It’s always a little disappointment, like sleeping through your first class or seeing a picture of your ex with their hot, new significant other. I have found one of the most daunting things in the world is getting a cold. This sounds like a joke, but it takes the energy out of you and just adds another burden on to a day that feels stuffed with them already.
My bad days progressively increased in occurrence throughout my high school years. Freshman year was rather low on bad days, and senior year was rather high. To anyone who knew me, I promise it wasn’t your fault. I just progressively grew more cynical and went through more traumatic experiences as time flew by. If you’re reading this and know what I’m talking about, that’s kind of cool. If you’re reading this and don’t know what I’m talking about, use some of your experiences to relate and we will continue on.
From these bad days, I have learned so much. Truthfully, I cannot imagine what my life would be like without all of the bad days I’ve had in the past couple years. The biggest lesson I’ve learned from the bad days is that they aren’t exactly bad days. Just because a couple bad small things line up next to each other doesn’t mean it’s going to be bad day.
The second biggest lesson I’ve learned is this: a very good thing comes from bad days, and that is the difference between good and bad days. If every day was a good day, then you wouldn’t appreciate any of the days you had. Because I had so many bad days, I now know what it feels like to have a good one and I appreciate them a lot more. I’m willing to bet money that Britney appreciates her hair so much more now that she knows what it’s like without it.
Lastly, here’s a word of advice to the homies out there. Life isn’t bad. To be on this earth is a blessing and in no way a curse. Treat every day like it’s a good day. Show some love to the people in your life that work to make you happy. Appreciate the smaller things in life, not the finer ones.
