A Day In The Life Of A College Athlete

Its 3 a.m., you are all cozied up in bed and take a peep at your phone “Yes two more hours” you think to yourself and roll over to go back to sleep. It seems to only be five minutes later, but your alarm is going off and its time to take on the day. You roll out of bed, put on your outfit on for weights, brush your teeth, get your backpack, think about doing your hair but just throw it up in a bun, and you’re out the door. After that five minute walk to weights in sub-freezing weather you’re in the weight room and wait for your lift coach to get everything ready because he too is still trying to wake up. An hour and fifeteen minutes later, you have finished your workout and realize you have just enough time for breakfast! (This is something that needs to be celebrated because it rarely happens)

After breakfast at 7:30, you have class at 8… Then another class at 9… After that you have an hour break, what should you do? Get a snack, do some homework, or take a nap? Who are you kidding, you fastwalk to your dorm and get as much sleep as you can until your next class at 12. Oh no, you forgot to print out your essay, you have 15 minutes to get to study hall, print it out, and get to class. You send out a message to your team asking if anyone can print it out and bring it to you and thankfully someone was there. They meet you in front of your class, you thank them, and get into class a little sweaty from that brisk walk to class.

Class is over for the day and you have an hour thirty till practice starts, but you need to be at the field 10 minutes early, but have to have the field set up before that, and you need your ankle taped so you really have 20minutes until you should be in the locker room. But, that’s okay because you still have enough time for lunch. What should you get? A burger or a healthier option? Of course you choose a salad. You get your food, rush to the locker room, eat it, get dressed, go to rehab, and then up to the field you go right on time.

Three hours later practice is over. Haha, but you still have conditioning. That takes 30 minutes and now you are done with any and all physical activity. Its 6 p.m., you go get dinner with some of the team, and then back to the dorm to shower. It’s now 7 and you just arrive at the library, with loads of assignments. But you take about 30 minutes to socialize with all of your friends and talk about your day. Now its time for the hardest part of the day, actually doing your homework. But you get to it and put a pretty good dent in it until you realize it almost 12am… You pack your stuff and head back to the dorm.

You’re back in the dorm. You pack up your bag for tomorrow’s activity, brush your teeth, and crawl into bed. You think about your day, think about all the aches and pains, but no matter how tired or bad your body hurts you wouldn’t have it any other way. You're thankful for the friendships you have made and how so many would kill to be in your place. You set your alarm clock for 5am, say a quick prayer, and to bed you go.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
