His name is Fitzwilliam Darcy. You've probably heard of him.
And if you have heard of him, you have probably wholeheartedly jumped on the bandwagon without fully realizing what the big deal is anyways. Have you ever stopped to wonder why, over 200 years later, women are still obsessed with him? And these aren't just your average fangirls either. These are intelligent, well-read, fiercely independent mini-Lizzy Bennets, if you will. It would take quite a man to take over their affections. So let's get the low-down on this Mr. Darcy:
I sometimes wonder what a modern Darcy would be like. Most qualities would be same, including the obvious trifecta: tall, dark and handsome. But his shyness and arrogance would come across most in how he would use technology. He's the guy that won't ever text you first, but then when the conversation starts he'll hit you with that double text, but your response to his enthusiasm will be followed by him ignoring you for 24 hours. He'd also be the guy tweeting passive aggressive and conflicting song lyrics at three in the morning. And without a doubt he'd be the guy on his phone at the party, avoiding the dance floor like it's the plague.
So, why this guy?
It's complicated. It was complicated for Lizzy back then and it is complicated for modern women today. We love to hate him. It's not just the superficial wealth and appearance that make Darcy, Darcy. It's all the emotional baggage, and drama and the whole "ardently" loving thing. Women who love Darcy love passion. They love the chase. They love the bad boys. There, I said it. Darcy may be the first bad boy ever written. And not a bad boy in the womanizing way. Obviously, we have Wickham for that. No, Darcy was a gentleman. But he was your typical I'm-too-cool-for-you-and-love-and-I'm-going-to-pretend-like-I-have-no-feelings type of bad boy.
In that sense, things really haven't changed much in our dating culture. Okay ... a lot has changed. But, the basic premise remains.
In a time of superficial emotions and easy access to hookups, every now and then it's nice to slow it down with a guy who is a bit more reserved in his approach. Someone who is much more than what meets the eye. Perhaps that is why Darcy is still enchanting women today ... he surprises us.
