A Scandalous Love

We love because He first loved us.

A Scandalous Love
David Bell

I've really hesitated on talking about this subject. Love is a touchy subject. We all have different definitions of the word. If you were to go to 100 random people and ask them what love is, you'd most likely get 100 different answers. My definition of love is the typical church answer: Jesus. Jesus is love personified.

This might seem like I'm just using Jesus as a scapegoat but in actuality, if you've met the Jesus that scripture talks about, you'd be writing this same thing. In 1 John 4:19, scripture says, "We love because He first loved us." The love of Christ is so vast, so wide, so expansive, so deep, so scandalous, etc. I could go on for days without stopping. The Creator of the universe and everything we know sent Himself as a baby into a lowly manger. He grew up loving people and loving God. At 30 He started His earthly ministry of telling people of the hope that had come to earth to save them. He died for our wrongdoings, sin, and it wasn't pretty. He was whipped 39 times. He carried a Roman cross about a mile up a hill. He was nailed to that very cross. He owned nothing; even His garments that He did own were auctioned off before Him as He was dying. He died in a way that the King of Heaven shouldn't have even thought of. He died a gruesome and painful death and all the while He had one thing on His mind: you.

The love Jesus has for you and me is indescribable. I wish we had the vocabulary to show what it's like but human words cannot contain His love. This kind of love is what we're supposed to have for people (John 13:34). The way we love people is a direct representation of our walk with God (1 John 4:7-8).

As I'm writing this, I'm deeply convicted. The love of Christ is compelling and overall something we should attempt to emulate. The way people know we are different is how we love others (John 13:35). My prayer is that we love people as Christ first loved us. A sacrificial, scandalous, and dangerous love. This kind of love is scary. This kind of love is dangerous. This kind of love is messy and hard. You will be hurt sometimes but this is how Jesus loves, so shouldn't we try to replicate that? If we really want to be like Jesus more, it's time to start loving like Him. May we love people as God loves us. Much love and God bless.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
