The honeymoon period of the beginning of school is officially over. Midterm exams have already started. The humidity has finally dropped below “sauna” which means you can no longer get away spending your nights out greeting people, catching up with those you haven’t seen all summer, or making sure you have a few good screenshot worthy snaps sent out. Instead you will have to dance. Especially you, freshman - the frats officially open up some time, I don't know, maybe they’re already open, (SWUG status officially checked out of this life). Brush up on your moves people - stealing the show in the middle of the dance floor is probably the best way to spend a night. Or you know what? You do you - dance in a corner, dance on a table, dance on the bar, if you’re super athletic dance on the bull at PBR (swear to god, saw some guy do this the other night. He danced whilst standing on the bull. Savage). Regardless, who what where when or how, dance. I am a full believer in dancing as a cure to everything. In case you’re a little rusty here are some go to moves that can be whipped out in any situation in any music genre.
The Whip (watch ODBJ slay)
Popularized by the song Watch Me. If done correctly, with a good sense of rhythm, this can be done to any song in any genre. To begin lift your left knee to your right elbow, then step to the side with your left foot, following with your arm as if you are whippin some ride. Hair flips encouraged. Repeat on other side.
The Nae Nae (as demonstrated by queen Jlo)
Second main dance of the song, Watch Me. Another easy one to do to any beat. This involves moving one hand slowly up above your head whilst moving it left and right. Your head usually moves in opposite direction of hand.
Snap Step (grandmother FTW)
So easy. Please tell me you all know this. Step to one side, snap or clap or like in this gif, wave your hands. Then step to the other.
Dougie (the biebs is better than you'd think)
To be honest, the rules to the Dougie are esoteric. It’s a bunch of shoulder and mini arm movements and a 1-2-3-3 step movement. Chris Brown does it so so well. Beyonce has a pretty skilled Dougie too. It pains me to admit it but so does Bieber.
Salsa
(Victor Cruz's signature TD dance (side note - touchdown dances are great places to find new dance moves or just new cool things to do with your body in general (I personally employ the superman shirt ripping whenever I enter a room).
Let your Zumba skills fly! The hips and shoulders go wild as you step forward with left foot and then back to middle with left and back with right foot and to middle with right foot. Arms make mini running motions. Sass is necessary here. Hair flip optional.
Crump (modeled by unknown fierce princess)
Reserve for special songs. Aka some bass bumping hardcore rap. Go crazy.
The Bop (oh Drake, you goober)
Just bounce on beat. Make as small or large a movement as you wish. Head or whole body.
Fist Pump (no chill ever)
The no chill go-to for college concert goers. It’s a way to show how hyped you are with absolutely no skill involved. It’s rowdy.
There are so many more dance moves, but these are a few goodies to keep in your back pocket until the moment is right. Feel free to combine a few or all.
