There are many TV shows that we indulge in during our spare time. Though one show that I started watching and really enjoying is "Criminal Minds," this crime drama begins and ends each episode with quotes that leave you thinking. A lot of those quotes apply to us right now.
Here are some of my favorites from some of the characters and episodes that I think are perfect for our everyday student lives.
1. “Whatever you are, be a good one.” — Abraham Lincoln
Whether you want to be a doctor, a psychologist, a teacher, an FBI profiler, or whatever you're graduating for, just make sure that you're doing it to the greatest of your ability.
You owe it to your family, your professors, and, mainly, yourself to achieve those goals that you have. Whatever makes you happy in the future, that's what you need to strive for.
2. "In life, unlike the game of chess, the game continues after checkmate." — Isaac Asimov
Now is the time to realize that life keeps moving on, even if we want it to slow down.
If you decide to change your major and have to stay another year (although, there is nothing wrong with that), the rest of your friends are going to graduate. If you decide to skip class, then the professor isn't going to not give a lecture, just because you aren't there.
It's not going to stop for just you and, even if something completely unexpected happens, it will still keep on going, not slow down for you to catch up.
3. "There are things we don't want to happen, but have to accept, things we don't want to know, but have to learn, and people we can't live without, but have to let go." — Jennifer Jareau
As we go through our college years, one of the biggest lessons that we will have to learn is to move on.
Move on from the high school drama that might spill over into freshman year or the boyfriend that dumped you over Christmas break.
We have to accept that things change. People change, you change, and times change. If you can't let go of the past, then you'll never be able to get on with your life.
4. "Try again. Fail again. Fail better." — Samuel Beckett
You might not get the best grade on the first test. Try again. You might have to drop a class. You might have to drop that same class again the next semester. Try again. You might change your major, then realize after you're halfway through your junior year that it's not for you. Try again.
We're going to mess up and make the wrong choices and bad decisions, screwing up too many times to count. We're young and dumb. We have a lot of time ahead of us to worry about making the right ones.
5. “When we were children, we used to think that, when we grew up, we would no longer be vulnerable, but to grow up is to accept vulnerability. To be alive is to be vulnerable.” —Madeleine L’Engle
When we are young, we don't realize that there is more to the world than coloring books and moms making our lunches. By the time we get to college, we will have our whole lives put together for us. We will be invincible.
Nowadays, we know that could never be true. As we do grow up, we get more responsibilities and more work, but it's worth it. It might not have been foreshadowed at five-years-old, but it will be shown as we move forward in our lives with whatever we decide to do.
