Crappy Days You Will Experience: College Edition

College is a very temperamental period of your life. Some days you can feel like you’re on top of the world with all of the opportunities you could ever dream of laying at your feet, and the confidence to achieve it all. But, let’s be honest, there are more days that feel like they’re never going to end, with an endless amount of homework and studying that could be done, making you contemplate quitting college and becoming a stripper instead.

Those days are the days where the unimaginable, hell, the unthinkable happens. Whether it’s sleeping in too late or being hungover, you always know that morning what kind of day it is going to be. There are endless amounts of possibilities for unfortunate circumstances during those days in college, and here are just a few situations that everyone has experienced at least once.

Being late to class

We all know that feeling you get when you casually check your phone to see what time it is in the morning, and realize that class starts in five minutes. This is when you know your day is fucked. No matter how hard you try you won’t be to class on time, so no matter what, the rest of your day will feel at least three steps behind, and don’t forget everyone will look at you when you show up late to class. What makes it worse is that when you get to class, there’s no way the door won’t sound like a slam. And if you’re like me, you’ll forget to hold the door, so it will definitely swing shut hard, and then everyone will definitely look at you. Those stares are always combined with a condescending look from the professor as they continue to lecture, somehow maintaining eye contact as you sit down and noisily unpack your things and try to forget the shame being projected on you by everyone in the room.

Coffee

I love coffee, and so does almost every college student I know. Additionally, it’s wonderful to have a nice steaming cup of coffee in class. But if you’re having a bad day, this comes with a serious set of risks.

A -- You could trip walking on the bricks to class and spill your coffee all over you, and possibly the others walking near/next to you.

B -- You could spill all of your coffee while you’re sitting down in class, getting it all over your seat, yourself, and the people already sitting down around where you were going to sit. I say “going,” because you should probably move and go sit near people who aren’t angrily Tweeting/Snapchatting/texting about you.

C -- This is even worse, but there is a possibility that you get really into taking notes, or you go to reach for something out of your backpack, and you forget about your coffee. Then you could spill it on everyone around you in the middle of class, with the professor watching.

D -- But the most embarrassing situation that could happen involving coffee in class is if you spill someone else’s coffee on themselves. This is always the most awkward thing, because it’s not like it’s even your coffee that you spilled, IT’S THEIRS. AND, if you’re really lucky, this will happen in the middle of class, and then all of your classmates will know how badly you fucked up too.

These situations are always made a lot worse because most universities have hand-blow dryers in the bathrooms, so it’s impossible to find paper towels or anything efficient to clean up the coffee with. And what do you bring back to the people you just showered with milk and sugar? Single ply toilet paper?

The library

The library can be a wonderful place to be quiet, go to your happy place, and study your ass off. The thing is, for this environment to be calming and productive, you need to be in a good space. And usually, when your day hasn’t been going that great, the library makes it so much worse.

First, I know most people listen to music walking around campus, and when you go into the library and it’s quiet, the headphones make it hard to hear the silence. So if that isn’t picked up on, there’s a high chance everyone who was in the study zone just heard your music coming through your headphones and listened to you loudly unpack your things without you noticing a thing. Until you take off your headphones and realize how silent it is, then you’ll feel everyone looking at you and blaming their failed exam results on your loud music. It’s also horrible when you don’t turn down your volume when you close your laptop, so that when you open it in the silent library either “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” or Beyoncé is blasting through your speakers. This situation is even more awkward because, a) you disrupted everyone, and b) everyone that you disrupted is totally judging you on what they just heard come out of your laptop. You can feel them judging you so hard.

Overall, college is a difficult time for everyone. You're on your own for the first time, and have all the pressures of being in school on your shoulders along with most likely a job, and a social life. Sometimes all of these things come together and add up to the shittiest days known to man, but learn to find the humor in it. Hang in there!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
