5 Ways To Cope Without Your Pet At School
Maddie Ostrander

Goodbyes are never easy. By far, the hardest goodbyes are the ones you give your pets. You are at home and all of your things are packed up in the car. You crouch down to your pet's level and try to look them directly in the eyes so it looks like they are listening to you. Maybe you cry. Okay, of course you cry. Just look at that sweet face! If you are saying goodbye to your dog, they are probably licking your face now. If you are saying goodbye to your cat, they probably walked away because they don’t want to witness you embarrassing yourself. If you own a fish, I’m sure they are…blinking in your direction?

Leaving your favorite buddy behind isn’t easy. The best feeling in the world on a bad day is knowing you can go cuddle up with someone who isn’t going to judge you. There are ways to cope through this weird transition period without your furry/not-so-furry friend.

1. Go Outside!

If you take a walk outside, I can essentially guarantee you will see at least three dogs. Especially if the whether is nice or if you decide to walk to a park. I’ve seen dogs on walks, on the beach, at a restaurant, and even shopping. And I have stopped to pet as many as I can. Petting dogs is free and makes you happy. I have blatantly ignored their owners and just hung out with the dog for a good minute, because dogs are great and were put on this earth to be admired. Whenever I see a dog nearby, I continue to say “pup pup pup” until I have reached said pup. It’s like hyping yourself up to go pet this awesome dog.

2. Go to the Animal Shelter!

Most humane societies have completely open visitation hours during the day. Drive to the nearest shelter and go look at all sorts of creatures! Animals like the extra attention when humans come by to visit, and you might get to pet some of them! Most humane societies are overflowing with senior cats, so be sure to give them your love as well. Of course, there is always the option of volunteering there as well, so make sure to ask the staff about how you can help.

3. Join the Cool Dog Group on Facebook

I did this last week, and now my newsfeed is filled with pictures and videos of adorable dogs. It is literally a group of people who just love dogs and want to share that love with other people. I’ve never experienced such a strong force of positivity and happiness on social media before finding this group, but I’m so glad I did! There are 91,487 members and counting, so essentially everyone and their mom is already on there. You should be too!

4. Watch for Pet-Therapy Dates at School

A lot of universities have pet-therapy dates around midterms and finals to boost the mental health of students on campus. It is the perfect break for when you’re feeling stressed out and need to unwind. The animals they bring in are so sweet and gentle and are literally begging for all of your attention. By the time you’re done, you’ve forgotten about all the work you have left, as your brain has been filled with warm fuzzies.

5. Skype Your Pets!

If you just need to see your pets cute little mug, Facetime/Skype your parents and ask them to put your pets on! Your pet will be able to not only hear your voice, but see your face! And that is great for the both of you. You will need tissues nearby, because digitally reuniting with your pal can get emotional. This is also a great low-key way to talk to your parents without admitting you are a little bit homesick.

Believe me, I understand that pain of leaving your pet behind. Pictured above are my fur babies, Zesty (the 14-year-old yellow lab) and Tillie (the 9-year-old tortie). Make sure you have plenty of pictures saved of them for when you're feeling a little lonely. Don't forget, you can have fish in the residence halls if you're really desperate.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
