When I was 16, I planned on getting "wanderlust" tattooed on my thigh. A more commonly used word now in the time of hipsters, wanderlust is defined as a strong desire to travel. Now I am 20 and still plan on getting the tattoo. But, I'm waiting till I get some street credit. I am in love with travel and I have not even been anywhere yet.
Okay, anywhere is being dramatic. I grew up with Chicago and Milwaukee always giving me opportunities to discover culture. I moved to Minnesota last year. I have been on road trips to Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Canada and Massachusetts. I have a passport bearing one stamp, Mexico. So I have been places.
My issue is the constant dreaming of places which are far more difficult to get to. I dream of these places and food and culture of which I have never experienced.
How 20-year-olds get up and travel the world is beyond me. Yeah yeah, I have read the hundreds of blogs on "how I lived abroad on $1 a day". And I have also read the blogs about being stuck in India and working for change as a maid.
So for now, I will live my fantasy adventurer life through the internet and books while earning my degree. And when the day comes that I am fiscally capable to see everything this gorgeous world has to offer I will be prepared after my years of research.
For my other confessions,
- I have AirBnB downloaded, with the place I will stay in over 50 countries saved in my favorites.
- I take notes in a journal while watching Travel Channel. Specifically Anthony Bourdain. (Please see this and bring me along!)
- Every day I consider creating a GoFundMe page and reaping the benefits of generous strangers.
- I highlight my travel books and bend pages for easy reference.
- I hang out in my university's International Center to hear stories and snag brochures.
- My Pinterest could be sponsored by a travel company.
- I have decided that I am only marrying someone with access to free plane travel. Petty, I know, judge me.
- My bookshelf contains multiple travel guides.
- Currently I am trying to teach myself Arabic. It is not working at all. But I really want to volunteer in the Middle East, so I am going to keep trying.
- I would rather not buy groceries than touch my travel savings account. And yeah, I make that decision often.
To my other broke wanderers, I promise you we see it all.
