Like any college age female, my hair is my pride and joy. It has been cut, colored, and treated numerous times. It has gone from being down to my belly button to barely touching my collar bone in one sitting. My natural color is a dark brunette, but I've also been blonde, red-head, and even a dark plum mahogany purple. I've gone from having side bangs, to fringe bangs, to almost no bangs at all. I've been in several different chairs of only a handful of different stylists. They've given me a variety of advice when it comes to color and products.
One thing I've heard from almost all of them, "Try to only wash your hair once every few days." Important question: How often is "every few days?" Well I guess that depends on your hair type. Sophomore year I could go 5-6 days without a wash and without looking greasy and gross. Last year, I could barely go every other day. My last stylist informed me that our hair texture changes every 6 or so months. This made sense to me after going from hair that would never have a crease after hours of being in a ponytail to hair that is all kinds of crimped after throwing my hair up in a bun for 10 minutes to wash my face.
Currently, I'm at the stage where I hate washing my hair. I love having clean hair, but the work it takes to get there is tedious. If you have thick hair, then you know my struggle. You probably despise your hair dryer and/or have pretty toned arms because of it. If you've ever had long hair, you probably also know the struggle to brush it. When I was in high school I would have to brush what I could reach, then swing the rest of it around to the front to finish brushing through it.
So what does one do when dirty hair is gross but clean hair is too difficult?? You'd think dry shampoo would be the obvious answer, or maybe just braiding or throwing it up in a pony or bun. But what if having your hair up too much gives you headaches? This is my struggle. And when your natural hair is unpredictable, going to bed with it wet is always a gamble.
This morning my roommate and I had a complete conversation about how we wished we had naturally curly hair. How simple it would be to just wake up with natural hair and just go to class. We understand there are cons that goes along with curly hair, but the main pro would be to just not have to worry about it. You could just wash it and go on with your life.
If you can go almost a week without having to shampoo, dry, and style your hair, just know I am completely jealous of you and you should definitely embrace those locks.
