I can say, with the utmost confidence, that the internet plays some part in our everyday lives. Whether we are fighting with some asshole who lives two states away, following blogs that post about our fandom, posting pictures of our lunch for all the world to see, or just tweeting the next big thing so we can claim that we thought of it first: we let the internet take part in our everyday routines. But is that always a good thing?
True, I have found myself logged onto my computer for days when I should be doing a paper that’s due, like, yesterday. I am not ashamed because I know most people have done the same thing. I’m always looking up people to follow on Twitter just so I can reblog all the good stuff. I am constantly on Tumblr liking and reblogging the same joke I saw not even two minutes ago. I like on each Facebook photo that says “like for puppies or ignore for Bieber” so I feel better about myself. In general, the internet is my lover and it treats me kindly. But at the same time, I cannot stand the internet, even to go as far as to say I hate it sometimes.
Though it always has its good qualities, there is always someone, something, or some group of people who ruin the fun for everyone. I cannot stand when people on Tumblr start hating people and sending anon (or anonymous) hate mail because someone doesn’t like Harry Potter, or they’re Christians, or they decide to do more with their life then sit around a computer all day, or, GOD FORBID, they have an opinion they want to share. I hate it how thots on Instagram post up pictures of themselves stating “no filter” when everyone knows your face was slammed into a makeup palette before you took this picture. I hate myself for liking each page that pertained to me on Facebook and now I have hundreds of pages, offers, and stuff on my newsfeed that don’t belong there.
It may just seem like just another idiot ranting about what she hates and what grinds her gears. But, honestly, just look at yourself and think: Has any of this happened to me before? Has someone or something stopped me from enjoying something that interests me? Have fandoms begun to spin out of control? Who the hell is this joker and how did he find me on Facebook? Why am I seeing the same damn selfie this bitch posted up ten times already? Why on earth did I get a Twitter? What the hell is a Pinterest and why should I care? If I see one more goddamn Hotline Bling meme, I’ll fight Drake myself.
The internet is a place that has much to offer, especially in this time and age. It offers quicker information, communication, and entertainment. All of this and more are at the tip of our fingers. But it can also be home to the most ignorant, creepy, spiteful, and annoying assholes the world has to offer us. So am I just another person bitching and going off on a tangent? Yes, I am. But it’s not like I don’t have a reason.
