“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” Genesis 1:3
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.’” Genesis 1:26
The very foundation of Creation rests on spoken word. Language, words, communication – these are the very foundation of human existence. The very existence of humanity is founded on communication. The thought patterns of God and relationship with Himself as the triune God show the basic need for communication before mankind even began. God even compares himself to written language. “’I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.’” Jesus is referred to as the “Word” in John chapter one. He was God’s communication or message for man. Almost everything we do as humans is for the purpose of furthering or bettering communication.
How do we communicate?
Some of the most popular ways our generation communicates are via social media. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, as well as other forms of social media are how we choose to tell our story or share our voice. And these are great tools for communication, but are we so concentrated on these tools that we forget about the basest form of communication? What we say on social media says something about us. What we say and how we act in person says a great deal more. The words we speak as well as our actions reflect our immediate thoughts and expressions more accurately than a well-thought out social media post at times. We communicate with verbal language and body language. Everything we do communicates! So, does our social media communication line up with our physical communication? We communicate through words in our everyday conversation, but we also communicate a lot through our body language. Have you ever heard words come out of someone’s mouth that don’t match up with their actions or the vibe they are giving off through their body language?
“Everything relies on communication.” So what does this mean to us?
Recognize that everything you do communicates.
Be aware! What you say online reflects who you want to be. Are your actions and words in day to day conversation reflecting the same person? If your employer were to read what you post on social media and then talk to you in person the same day, would he realize that the poster and the person before him were one and the same? Miscommunication is one of the biggest hindrances in life because communication is the basis for all life. Our brain communicates with the rest of our body, we communicate with other people, and God communicates with us. The last thing we want is for someone to take what we said or did and misinterpret it to mean something completely different than what we intended.
Learn how to communicate accurately.
Knowing how to communicate what you are thinking is a great skill to have. What you have to say is important! Practice observing others reactions while being aware of what your physicality says about you. You may know how to communicate through a well-thought out social media post, but do you communicate the same message on a daily basis through your words and actions? Listen to yourself when you communicate and determine if your words were coming out of someone else’s mouth, would they convey the idea in your head.
Keep communicating!
“Everything relies on communication.” This is not a statement to be taking lightly. Even in a world full of diversity in culture, language, and history, we are still communicating! Know what you want others to hear from what you say, and use every part of your being to communicate that. Communication is one of the most integral parts of life, so as you keep living, keep communicating.
