Coming Home For Winter Break: As Told By Parks And Recreation
Marie Claire

Towards the end of the fall semester, the only things on all college students' minds are 1) Finals and 2) Winter Break. The stress of finals week will soon be met with the relief of two and a half weeks of pure relaxation...or so we think.

For most of us, including myself, the stresses that come with being at home far outweigh those that are included with an 18 credit, two job semester. However, it's not all what it's cracked up to be between family, working, and waiting for the inevitable: another semester on the horizon.

Not only is Parks and Recreation a binge-watching worthy series of hilarity, it also provides some great one-liners that accurately describe every college student's thoughts about coming home for winter break.

If you're anything like me, you'll spend your first few days of being home stationed on the couch with Netflix to keep you company. And then all of a sudden it's December 22nd and you've forgotten to finish Christmas shopping and the panic sets in...

So when you do finish up shopping (gift cards for everyone!!), and it's finally the day before Christmas you're all like:

But then the realization of what is happening sets in and you figure out who your best friend will be during holiday gatherings...

And you're forced to see family you only see one to two times a year and you're like:

When family starts arriving and begins asking the usual questions: "how's school?" (fine), "have you graduated yet?" (no grandma, I'm only on my third year), and the always fun "why don't you have a significant other yet?" you're thinking:

But because food is included in all holiday celebrations, and you've eaten nothing but cafeteria food and coffee for an entire semester, you eat like you've never seen real food before...because calories don't count on break, right?

And finally, when all of the family interaction is over and you can finally relax and enjoy some quiet time...

So you go on Facebook to see how your friends spent their Christmas, and everyone and their brother is getting engaged, and you really want to be happy for them, but you're also kind of like:

Then, after the excitement of the holidays is over, you realize how broke you are and have to spend the rest of your break working...

Of course, you won't work TOO hard, because as we all know...this is a break and you have every right to.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
