How To Combat Homesickness At School

For many college freshmen, this is the first time experiencing true stay-up-as-late-as-you-want, manage-your-own-time, no-rules freedom. You are given an opportunity to live, act, and think like an adult. Although exciting, the occasional onset of homesickness is inevitable.

1. Call home sometimes.

Naturally you will want to call your parents, and I can guarantee they will want to hear from you. However, be careful not to call too often as it may make the transition even more difficult. If you spend too much time checking in with life at home, you might pass up making memories at school. Try delaying your next call home and take time to appreciate the people around you.

2. Get involved.

Worcester State has clubs, events, and teams for everyone. Within the next few weeks, there will be a Club fair organized and it gives you a chance to look around and see what clubs have to offer. Make it a priority to stop by and peruse the booths of the various student groups on campus. Whether you audition for theatre, join Student Council, or write for the school paper, getting involved will surround you with great people that share similar interests and distract you from any feelings of homesickness.

3. Leave your room.

Your perfectly decorated dorm room doesn’t compete with a walk through the beautiful campus so put down the Netflix and enjoy life on campus and in the community By exploring events instead of hiding in your dorm, you will have less time to feel homesick and might have some fun, too.

4. Establish a routine.

Adjusting to a college lifestyle is undeniably difficult. With new sleep patterns, study habits, and interests, it is easy for life to seem chaotic at times. Establish a routine to help you stay on track. This consistency will ease your mind and make the transition easier.

5. Keep a positive attitude.

Remind yourself how lucky you are for the opportunity to attend such a prestigious university with a gorgeous campus. Sure, it will be hard at times, but approaching the challenges with a grateful heart is the best cure for homesickness. Stay positive through your first disappointing test grade, roommate disagreement, and whatever else comes your way.

It's important to remember that you are not alone. Your peers are adjusting to the college lifestyle while battling homesickness, too. Don't hesitate to talk to a new friend or your roommate about how you're feeling.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
